car wont start up

well the cars not running!!!

to many things to single anything out.

straight engine swap. ecu and keys also used that were all working before. everything in the engine bay is plugged in.

so here goes.

theres power to ignition and everything electrical inside the car works. radio, fans, lights (interior and exterior). only problem is the engine. when you turn the key theres no feed to the starter solenoid. i check a few pins on the ecu and they were getting power but i dont know exactly what they were for i just checked for the sake of it. if i run a live straight to the solenoid the engine turns over but wont fire.

when you turn the key the fuel pump doesnt prime but wire it directly off the battery and it runs fine. so i put the fuel pump on and try starting again and still nothing, (this was done with the key in the ignition on number 2), so then i took out a HT lead, put a spark plug in it and touched it down to the negative on the battery, turn it over and there was no spark.

so is it the

ecu? spark is controlled but the ecu but theres no spark on the plug?

fuse box? not sending the right power to the right place?

central door locking module? its a late 97 car but the module is from a 95? but it still fits the plugs

or something else?

the only difference is that the engine, ecu and key came out of a late 95 car. the engine itself is originally from a gti so that has the right parts. the ecu (cast) and key were working on the other car. just the transceiver is different (as its a later car).

i checked all the plugs and there all connected.

so now what?

i tried a new ecu loom today and theres no difference. the tranciever is only different becuase the car is a 98 and the transciever say 96ap on it. not sure what else to do really. may have to give it to an auto electrician or try all standard electrical parts

no the fuel pump doesnt prime. the black ignition relay click when you turn the key. everything electrical works. radio, fans, lights, but the engine wont turn. i think theres a problem with a communication between the key and the ecu.

if anyone has a late 97 /98 gti can you tell me the part number for the tranciever and for the central door locking module? then i can get the exact parts and give it another try

I can give you the finis code if that will help.

Up to 3/96 the transceiver had a fixed wire - from 3/96 on it had a plug on it. They changed the finis code in 97.

mine says 96ap and has a green plug but meeksta is sending me the one that was originally on the car so ill use that and see. also i been trying to figure out where the problem is. because the fuel pump isnt priming and there no spark when i hot wire it to turn over (with the key in the ignition on number 2) i think the problem is the ecu. maybe not the ecu itself but theres either a lack of power or signals to tell the engine what to do.

also the engine doesnt turn over by the key. does that circuit also run through the ecu or is it literally a straight connection from the key to the starter solenoid? becuase its about a 4mm cable off the key but all the cables in the ecu are only about 1mm - 1.5mm unless the circuit goes elsewhere thats also controlled by the ecu?

All the problems you are describing are due to the PATS immobiliser doing its job. Simply put, PATS reads the serial number of the ignition key, and if it isn't one of the keys programmed into the ecu the car won't turn over or start if you hot wire it. Does the led on the dash flash fast when you turn the key?

The starter is wired through a relay which is controlled by the ecu - hence the thin wiring. Fuel pump and spark are also controlled by the ecu.

I don't think that the transceiver is programmed with a unique serial number. I changed one on a Fiesta and it worked fine, but Escorts may be different.

I don't understand why you are changing the ecu if you are putting a 1.8 in place of a 1.8 though?
