5 am this morning I had my dashboard scattered all over my path and the pavement in a vain attempt

to find out why my clock led doesnt flash at intervals while left undisturbed.

I changed all the PATS wiring thats hidden behind the dash to that which came with my new ECU and lockset and still no joy.

So I gave up and bolted it all back together knowing it works but doesnt flash :(

So Im maybe not much more help

Anyway,

if you turn to cranking position on the ignition will the motor turn over now or is it just cancelling everything and going to a "dead" state.

i.e. turning all the dash lights out and acting like no key is in the ignition ?

if all the lights stay on and the red led doesnt flash rapidly we have to look elsewhere for the damn problem.

When you say the fuel pump doesnt prime at position 2 if its not caused by the PATS then have you checked the wiring under the back seats is ok ?

Also did you pull the rubber bung out that goes through the floor in the back seat and check the wiring to the fuel sender unit is ok and not shorted ?

I also know you checked but did you try a different fuel pump cut out switch to check that hadnt developed a fault.

Damn annoying thing is I have a known good set of all these parts but not close to you :(

My PAT's don't flash either, nor does my double locking work. Hey ho.

Nothing special so far today...

Rechecking some things:

Removed and tested fuel inertia cutoff - it works as it's meant to and even bypassing it, no fuel pump operation (or 12v at the wires for that matter).

Tested all relays except heated rear window & rear fog as theyve circuits in (timers I presume) and not worth breaking for the hell of it.

From input elsewhere, grounding pin 32 of the ECU allows the starter motor to run when I turn the key - unable to gather what this really means currently. Apparently ECU not grounded properly is the theory. There are 2 black cables fro the ECU going to a ring connector & bolted to the chassis, checked and retightened that to no effect.

Any ideas? Have I missed something?

A decent wiring diagram or indeed 1 diagram that actually matched the car would be nice. Ford manual isn't accurate, Haynes is closer! Losing the rag :/

Just as an update, I've checked 3 grounds on right side, one neat ECU on left and ones at battery.

Removed and stripped fusebox & resoldered all the joints on the outside - without desoldering the entire unit I can't get the inside ones.

Made no difference - so either I've missed something obvious (quite likely) or it's beyond me (also likely).

Tried to see if I could get any error codes out (blink codes ala LED / STO) but this escort is diff from my last and I don;t seem to be able to get the ECU to dump them. Nor can I find a guide here, strangely...

Anyways, without further options it's off to Mr Ford Monday morning as I'm out of ideas...

Cheers!

  • 3 weeks later...

Fix - for those who might have similar problem:

Ford have repaired cables behind the drivers side wheel arch cover, so the receipt says. Not personally checked, due to weather.

I never thought to look there but obviously at least 1 cable was buggered.

Cost in time? 10 days sitting in Ford car park til they bothered to look at it.

Cost in money? £65 tow to Ford and a straight £387 for 5 hours labour.

Hopefully that will save someone the same.

Just like to add thanks to Squiz, possibly saved my sanity.

Sucks it eded up in Ford to fix it though :(

so that must have been snagged wires befor they go into the engine bay into the connector block I presume.

Or one of the major wires from the battery down through the large rubber grommit :(

I would have been under there checking as soon as I got home

Least its fixed and your mobile again.

You could have nearly just bought my ghia for that money though :)

Maybe on the lip going into the engine bay

or the plastic guard smacked them when he went over the speedbump .....

Could just be corroded

million things could happen under there and we only know when it goes wrong :)

How often have you taken the wheel guards off :P
