I've heard that you can play Nintendo Gamecube games on the Wii and I was wondering what's the deal??

Is it just a case of put the game in and play??

I do know you need a controler to plug into one or more of the inserts on the top of the Wii.

Yes!
Those four inserts are Gamecube controler slots. There are two memory card slots on there too (you will need a proper gamecube memory card to save games).

The little Gamecube discs you may be surprised go into the Wii dvd slot too.
