Ps3 dead?

The yellow light of death, the problem is most likely NOT the hard drive so your data should be safe, Not sure on the ways and means of getting your exact problem fixed or the cost. Maybe contact sony customer services.

How old is it?

You may find they dont want/need the hard drive sent in with it for repair.

It's 60gb and had it since day it came out! I have seen few repairs on eBay which am tempted to go ahead with it mmh

my step brother had the yellow light of death, but replaced the motherboard and its back online!!

How much that cost?

Oh, the YLOD has got another one. Makes all us PS3 owners look a bit silly after taking the michael out of the red ring of death on the 360s.

Simply, what happens is that the repeated cycling of heating and cooling knackers up the crap solder that sony used to connect the CPU and GPU to the motherboard. You can 'reflow' the solder by heating it up to nigh on heating point using a heat gun, which Ive done twice now and does work, although it WILL break again, or you can send it off to get 'reballed', which is where technicians wipe off the old solder and apply new.

Sleeman - how much did your step brother spend on getting a new motherboard? It does seem a bit OTT, kinda like getting a new car if you get a puncture, but it may end up cheaper to do that.

Aye, I usually give it a good 4 or 5 minutes circulating the heat gun on medium-high heat about 2-3 inches above, moving between the CPU and GPU every 10 seconds or so. That usually does the trick.

Dont go overboard with the thermal paste during reassembly, though, otherwise youll be doing it again quicker than youd like.

6 weeks? Sounds like either too much thermal paste or you didnt get it hot enough. Do you watch blu rays or DVDs on it? Make sure you turn off DVD up-scaling, and tbh, I wouldnt use it for watching either anyway - Ive noticed mine seems to prevent the fans coming on full whack when its playing a BR/DVD, and when the films finish the fans ramp straight up to full speed. The slims arent supposed to be as bad, as they use much less electricity and subsequently generate less heat.

Id give it another go at reflowing, PS3s are still ~£270 new.

Mine did overheat and turn itself off a couple of weeks ago, didnt have time to exit my game of NFS:Undercover and it took out my savegame (corrupted it), and you cant even back them up! Wasnt happy...

Im gonna give the reflow another go (even if just to allow me to backup my data to an external) Following that my next plan may be to pay for a reball (there is an ebay seller who does reballs for 43 quid inc return postage[obviously posting to him is an extra expense, so 50 quid for a permanent fix....])

I dont watch DVDs or blurays, but do watch video files (from 500GB internal and 500GB external drives) (some of which are HD quality)

Last night i actually had my foot close to the side of my PS3 and could feel the heat being exhausted out onto my ankle for half an hour prior to it dieing..but i wouldnt say i was blocking ventilation..I think it was just the fact the room in general was fooking sweltering (upstairs, 28 degrees outside, projector in the bedroom... never a good mix)

Oh, and this time the sequence of lights is different.

previously it was just red,gre-yellow red beebeebeep, red stays on solid

Now its red, green...blue comes on and flickers (drive spins up) then yellow red beebeebeep. red continues to flash

I'm all fixed (have been for over a week) done another reflow and it worked. I think next time i will pay for a re-ball as they are successful and £50 is better than £200 for a new slim. I want this PS3 to last until PS4 comes out lol (I got this close to launch time i think)

Had YLOD again 2 weeks ago, sent the PS3 away on friday last week to Monster electronics, they've removed the chips from the board, cleaned it all up and resoldered the chips on using new solder (better than the cheap crap sony use so it wont die again due to solder cracking) They also lube the fan and give the inside a good dusting (which ive done a lot recently anyway as ive had it open 4 times since last november)

Anyway, its a GT5/Black ops gameathon later!
