Project Pimp.

Stick a rougher pad on mate then smooth again. Pain in the arse but try a rougher pad before slashing it with a wire brush on a drill. If you cant get rid of the pits and there's tiny spots of the rust, you can get from halfrauds rust beater stuff. It works by turning rust spots a dark colour ( dont know all the detail on how it works) But it somehow stops th rust from spreading and youcan then paint over the top of it. Dont forget to use etch primer on bare metal spots before normal primer. This helps stop rust forming on areas that youve rubbed right down.

Will do, how much rougher? I've got 80? Haha.

Yeah i've ordered some Kurust, does exactly the same job because one of my arches that i fillered has rust spots coming through so i've got to re do that one.

Cheers mate.

Kurust that was the name of it!lol 80 will do, its only so you dont go deeper than you need to. If it not rough enough then go for the wire brush. Should be though.

Haha ;)

Yeah, i'm sure it will do it, it's not like a big rot patch, just bits of rust coming through that's all. Cheers again mate.

Some paint accessories.

i woulndt wire brush the entie roof as you might end up with more filler in it to hide all the imperfections it could create

the roof lets my mk1 down as it used to have a vinyl roof which was removed and its still full of imperfections after loads of filler in it

That's a fair point i suppose, ta for pointing that out before i did it.

Decided to take the day off work and start doing some work on the car. Last night it was so hot that i couldn't sleep, i can only sleep in cold conditions, so i tried my best to have a bit of a lie in. Water sedimenter arrived in the post today.

An option to consider with the roof maybe to paint strip it, remove all the old paint, then wire brush the areas of rust, the rest of the roof block it with p120 then p240 for a finer finish.

Apply one light coat of 1k acid etch primer, this is an adhesion promoter for the high build primer, then apply your high build over the etch primer.

Sounds like alot of work but it prob quicker in the long run.

If it helps I've got some pics of how to flat 2k high build primer......

A guide coat shows any imperfections after flatting. A can of black spray paint will do. Lightly spray over the relevent panels, then when flatted off, any low areas that need either filling or more flatting will show up with the black paint thats filled the pits. :thumb:

That's genius!

A guide coat is a thin mist of colour applied over high build primer and then wet flatted off. Initial sanding will remove the high points, and it is only when the whole of the guide coat has been removed that the high points of the panel will be level with the low points - then the surface will be completely smooth and ready for top coating.

Cheers fellas, i may have a try on a panel and see what happens. Before i started it was "Rub it down, primer it and paint it....done" I couldn't have been more wrong could i?
