Well they all do that. It came down to size for me. I have a 10" Asus Transformer and the Nexus 7 and I rarely use the transformer now. I bought the N7 just to have on the bedside table to email/surf in the morning when I wake up early. The transformer was just too bulky for that, but I do tend to take it away with me if i'm staying overnight in a B&B or something, but maybe the N7 will do that duty now.

If its net stuff and general tablet app'ing go for one of the low market cost ones from chinkland, they cover all the bases for entry level tablets and generally surpass entry level also while keeping the prices as low as possible while retaining functionality, they also have a rapidly growing Euro&UK support base.

If you prefer sticking to the more name established euro pads then you'd be hard pushed to beat a nexus, however you'll be paying roughly 30-40% more on the retail price over a chink tab for what sounds like performance aspects you'll neither use or need and in most aspects are only slight improvements over a Chinktab of similar spec.

I currently have a "Ainol Novo 7 ELF 2"(one of said ChinkTabs), It happily runs any and all apps Ive thrown at it so far without hiccup and Ive found it has a massive software support base in the UK already so Ive been spoilt for choice in what OS I have installed on it, its also to date not shown a jot of unreliability.

Ainol Novo 7 - £80-90

Nexus 7 - £140-150

really depends what sorta load your gonna put on it?

first tablet with all round decent spec and performance go with the chinky

more powerful spec for more advanced purposes go with the nexus

Slightly misleading info from Shaw there tbh.

The Chinese tablets were good up until google released the Nexus7 (we are talking quad core tegra here vs single core budget cpu)

With the Nexus 7 you get a far better OS in Jellybean

Nexus 7 will be up to date for a good few years (Chinese don't and also offer little to no support from manufacturer)

Updating a chinese tablet is not fun for the average user.

Chinese tablets in that price range are usually 8 gig vs Nexus 7 at 16bg

Price of the Nexus 7 is actually £159 for 16gb and £199 for 32gb

Build quality of the Nexus 7 is far better than the Chinese ones.

Screen quality and resolution of the Nexus 7 blows the Chinese out the water hands down.

Chinese tablets were bargains until a few months ago, now it is worth paying that bit more and haing branded quality.

Best choice for what your needing is the Nexus 7 without doubt.

If you have the cash (£269) and want top quality the iPad mini is awesome (if you can find one in stock) simple. Slimmest sleekest tablet around but pricey.

I've heard the cheap chinaland tablets you can buy from the likes of Argos (and carphone warehouse give them away with contracts (they also give away the galaxy tab with more expensive contracts but thats not the same)

These shitty ones have terrible reviews on places like the argos website with many being taken back within a month or so..So i think i know where my money would go. Samsung etc

don't think I was being misleading at all there tbf Pete.

I approached his question in terms of what He requires NOT what He can get and going by the description of his needs I cant see justification for paying out more money for a tablet thats far above his stated requirements, true the Nexus 7 is a good tablet......BUT....... why use a expensive sledgehammer to kill a fly when a rolled up cheap newspaper will more than suit the needs.... if you get my meaning.

Ps for Pete(put CM10 on your Novo 7 advanced..... you wont be disappointed) :thumb:

funny this should pop up, i am no computer geek!!!!!!, but i have just bought a PIPO, android from china, £147.00, all in, and i have to say i am very impressed with it, it only comes with 16gb, but i have bought a 32gb card which it will take, very responsive piece of kit, good graphics, and comes already loaded with most of the things you need to get started, may be worth a google, and see if it is what you are looking for, and all the reviews are good for it, some say the speakers are not that good, but i have not found a problem with them, and have bought a set of external speakers anyway, so thats that sorted. :thumb:

I may of been a bit harsh with misleading, I don't find the Chinese tablets anywhere near as reliable although I was very impressed by the advances and that unlike a few years ago these are very capable now.

Its just that the price drop of certain branded tablets has made them not a bargain now.

A Nexus 7 maybe beyond his needs but he will want some future proofing which chinese tablets don't offer tbh.

He will be restricted in terms of updates to the OS because of how Android rolls out the versions to different tablets (ying wong is rarely listed)

What is CM ? I gave my Android tablet to my mum when I got my iPad mini.

sorry thought you'd rooted your advance.

CM-CyanogenMod

For the benefit of those who haven't came across the name their seemingly the leading developers in the field of custom rom development atm, they basically take the OS's such as gingerbread (what most mid-range android phones run on out the box) and Jellybean (used in the higher spec android tablets such as the nexus) and port them for use on other android devices before releasing them to the general public for free.

currently the most popular selections are:

CM7 - Honeycomb, what I use one most all my android phones

CM9 - IceCream Sandwich, kinda a inbetweener for phones and tabs

CM10 - Jellybean, what I'm using on my Novo now

I imagine JellyBean runs nice on the Ainol then, it was rather good on ICS

suprisingly smooth and fast, Id thought ICS would have been hard to beat for reliability on my Novo but Jellybeans got its pretty much beat..... least nothings gone "pop" just yet. :pancake:

Not used it yet but its reported to be very smooth. Using a newer technique than ics so more than just an upgrade Project butter.
