Faulty fuel pump/relay

I decided to join after searching google for hours for an answer to a problem i have with my 1998 1.6 16v Escort Finesse.

It cut out last week as i was driving, and wont restart. There seems to be an issue with the fuel pump or relay. In the days leading up to it breaking down there was a clicking sound coming from the engine bay. Ive found a green relay in the back of the engine bay (close to the windscreen)

I assume this relay is the for the fuel pump? But cannot find anything online to confirm this. The fuel pump fuse had blown (under the dash) so i replaced that, but still it wont start Sad

There is no smell of fuel when i turn it over....it cranks but wont run.

Ive tried adding a picture of the relay...not sure how to do it here so i may have to try again.

I hope someone can help me, as i dont want to start buying parts that i dont need. Im not great with cars, and dont have loads of money to get it diagnosed by a mechanic, the cars only worth about £200.

I think this is the faulty part, but can find nothing online to say it is for the fuel pump.

In the days leading up to the car breaking down there was a clicking sound coming from behind the dashboard...possibly this green relay??? I have found the green relay on Ebay for about £9, it says it comes from a KA, but has the exact same part number as the one in my 1.6 16v Finesse

thats not a bad price for the relay, it's the part number thats important as most of the relays etc are inter-changeable between most fords. tbh give it a go and see if it works, can't do any harm.

Yea thats what im thinking....£9 might fix it....if it is the right relay lol

Problem i have is time, its due tax in a couple of days, 6 months is £125.....if the relay doesnt fix it im probably going to end up scrapping it. Shame really as i put a new clutch on it a couple of months ago, has an MOT until August and needs nothing to go through the MOT again.

I dont want to end up buying a relay, a pump, or having an electrical engineer look at it as the cars not worth a lot. I could buy a lil fiesta (2000 1.2l) for £500.

Went to a breakers earlier, and they didnt have a single escort there lol.

From what i can gather online, this relay fits a few cars, KA, Escort, Mondeo and Jaguar. I know if i go to ford they will want £50+ for the relay so im hoping to either win the one on ebay, or find one tomorrow in another breakers/scrap yard.

have you tried bridging the two large terminals with a jumper wire ? this will prove that the wiring from the fuse box to the fuel pump is ok you cant leave it in just long enough to test :thumb:

hold everything - just checked Haynes manual - fuel pump relay is BROWN an located in R3. the green one you have there is the starter inhibitor and if your sure thats whats clicking then replacing that should sort it! it would also explain the lack of fuel! go for the relay on ebay :thumb: have pm'd you.

Isn't the green relay on the bulkhead the fan high/low speed control on cars fitted with air con?

I'd also check the fuel pump crash switch

Hey :)

I looked at the switch in the footwell...its down as it should be...i think??

I replaced the green relay but the car still doesnt start. It turns over fine, but theres no pump noise. Normally as i turn the key to the second position i hear like a whiring noise and a click. I get neither.

I think the green one must be for the air con as i have a manual transmission. Maybe it is the brown relay....id assume thats on top of the fuse box???

Im probably going to pull the pump off tomorrow and test it to see if its the pump at fault. Thankfully the pump is only £35 if it does need replacing.

I was really hoping the green relay was the problem lol

Correct action is for the relay (and pump of course) to turn on for 1 second to prime the system when you turn the ignition on - this is the click and whir you describe. After this, the fuel pump doesn't run unless the engine is turning over.

The fuel pump relay is in the box. I would remove the relay and then bridge pins 3 and 4 on the socket to see if the pump runs before buying a new pump. If the pump runs then put a small 12volt bulb across pins 1 and 2 and see if it lights up for 1 second when you turn the ignition on.

Hey :)

I bought a brown relay on ebay...

BROWN RELAY 96FG14N089AA

Like an idiot, i never checked if this is the right brown one. There appears to be a larger one thats also brown...cost me £6 if i got it wrong lol

When you say box, i assume you mean the one by the air filter under the bonnet? Or is it on top of the fuse box under the dash?

I should really have checked it was the right one before buying it, fortunately il only be £13 out of pocket if this one also doesnt solve it.

No - that's a resonator box - it's empty

Or is it on top of the fuse box under the dash?

Yes - fuel pump relay is in position R9 AFIR

Hate to be a pain....is it hard to take the fuse box out to replace the relay? Are there any relays up near the steering wheel that could be at fault? The noise i heard, the clicking sounded as though it came from behind the steering wheel, hence i thought it was the green relay on the bulkhead.

There is a panel that comes off fairly easy. It has about 6 screws holding it in place. When this is removed you can see the fusebox but cannot access the top of it. There appears to be a clip at the bottom...i assume this is some kind of release?

Ive searched google for hours and can find nothing on how to take the fuse box out to change a relay :(
