My rolling road figures from today

Could get to one of those rare RR's thats actually bolt onto your wheel hub and give a true power rating, unfortunately its still only accurate as the formulas put into the calculation. These days Rolling roads are more interested in keeping the customer happy so they'll return and not dissapoint giving them a true power figure.

not all of them, some of them can be really stingy :P

So? Should you not be happy that you car made that power on a certain set of rollers?

Maybe if you are talking much bigger power that makes the car noticeably faster, but when its a 1.8 Escort which is 113bhp standard and just has an air filter and it makes another 15 odd bhp i just don't agree it would make the car any faster in "real life".....Thats all :baby:

I'm not saying people shouldn't be happy, for example my car got "1bhp" less, and the exact same torque as another 115ps escort that had more mods such as de-cat and 4-2-1 manifold. Which he must have spent quite a bit more on than my universal air filter i had and my catback exhaust.

Also i did say its good for comparing the cars under the same circumstances, and it is the closest most people will get to an actual figure. But you can only really compare two cars if they were there together on the same day. So i can't really claim that my car has more power than robs, only that on that one day it came up with that power.

Somebody should go to a RR and do 3 runs without their induction kit, and 3 runs with it and see if theres any difference, as i don't really think you could put your exhaust back to std quickly lol.

P.S: I was wondering out of interest how does the RR calculate the RPM of the engine? Because the one i went to nothing was connected to it. Surely the people running the RR need to enter in some data for it to calculate the RPM. You must need to have SOME data to start with to figure it out without actually connecting something to the engine directly?

For your information i run my old 1.6 without Exhaust/Induction kit and then with Exhaust/Panel Filter and it was 13BHP up on standard and had another 8ft lbs of torque. So in my eyes there is proof that small modifications can make a difference. It is well known that Zetecs respond incredibly well to minor breathing mods.

I think you should just be happy about what your car made and stop finding excuse as to why it might not be that figure :P . The best way to find out if your car is quicker than another is to find a nice long stretch of duel carriageway :D .

Theres no point arguing about this anymore lol, its a pointless argument, and i will always find an excuse for saying the figure was inaccurate lol.

I am however interested in how it calculates RPM.

Also how come everbodies 1.8 115ps seems to peak around 6200rpm, everyone seems to say they all have the same cams from the 130spec engine? Which going by the book you could say is true as it says for the 130 peak is at 6250, where as for the 115 it is 5750. Is it just because ford are cheap skates they put in the wrong cams? If so it seems to be cars from around late 97 to early 98 that are hitting this as their peak??

Is it an innacuracy in the RR or do you think they actually did put the wrong cams (technically wrong) into the engine.

you cant trust a thing ford says, i was reading my booklet ages ago, in one paragraph about changing oil started off saying do this to your escort, then halfway through the paragraph started calling it a mondeo, then a few sentences later went back to describing it as a escort. Fcuking arses.

    Thats hilarious lol

They say to push down on the clip to get a headlight bulb to be released, but you push towards the front of the headlight, which would only be "down" if the headlight was off the car and facing the ground.

It is well known that Zetecs respond incredibly well to minor breathing mods.

Do they?

I dont think that's true.

Zetecs, espec. 1.6s and 1.8s, have small valve sizes for good emissions control and fuel economy, and herein lies the main breathing restriction in these engines.

I had 4-2-1, decat, and full exhaust along w/ induction kit on my 2.0, but it produced 1bhp less than standard, although 3lbs/ft more.

Pinto and new Duratec engines respond well to breathing mods as they have large valves!

Anyway, as I see it rolling road results are seldom accurate. Many are up to 10% out, and on a 100bhp engine that can easily mean readings of 107 or 108bhp.

Are you coming to RR day in Northampton Rob (GTi)? Now and again you do get these miracle increases, such as Lees 131bhp 1.8!! :O

It wouldn't be accurate anyway :baby:

Rolling road days are still good for a bit of fun though :thumb:

Always put a downer on things you don't ya?!

Only things that arent accurate :baby:

I did say its a good fun day though, last rolling road i went to was good because a decent amount of people showed up, and there was some nice cars etc. I don't really believe my car made 129bhp like they said it did, but it doesn't really matter. Good day, good chance to meet people and see some nice cars :thumb: Not exactly putting a total downer on it ;)

Dan sort of has a point - but not the one he's making - if you got to rolling road A - what ever that may be, get a base figure then do any mods then go back to the same RR you have a figure to play with... an increas figure too, the arguements about RR's have basis, but an engine dyno is no more or less accurate, just fewer calculations to exptrapolate the figures...

oh and obviously we'd all be better off with G-tech prometers

and early zeta andzetec e engines don't do much for breathing mods as they wer designed with efficiency in mind... they respond well to chipping coupled with breathing mods though :thumb:

its the zetec SE (duratec) engine that responds well to breathing mods

Danny...

My 1.8 Si (in the scrap yard in the sky now) rollered 144bhp/128lbs.ft torque on Power engineerings rollers last august.... that was...

2.0 cams

2.0 tb,

2.0 maf

collins power chip

k&n pannel filter

However after a decat and powerflow exhaust she was much better top end, loads more go... she rollered on Balmuirs rollers at 136bhp and 126lbs.ft torque (i was a little dissapointed at first but realised how inflated P.E's figures were.. )

Note: This is the bit where Mike C's head gets really big and he says "told ya so" about the silly P.E argument from a month or so ago

So i'm thinking balmuir's rollers are pretty good in comparison.

but had the cat on, standard exhaust and manifold.

Also, my 1.8 GTi, catback exhaust and cone filter and 2.0 cams peaked at 6282rpm, 126bhp/123lbs.ft

So a good start.

For people intrested in a comparison..

Heres my old Si (136bhp) plotted against my new GTi (126bhp)

graph-old-new.jpg

And yes, pete morgan also spelt my reg wrong, twas P313 NMB..

Happy reading Danny!
