The shortened story of the GTi Estate

I know this is a very old thread but I'm a very old man and new on here.

Back in 1998 my first ever brand new car was a red Escort GTi estate (sold in 2001) so Lee's story is of interest to me. Back in the late '70's I was well into my Fords build a few V6 Cortina's, a show winning V6 Pop and my then G/F (now wife) a 1600GT auto Consul Capri.

Now with some money and a bit more time on my hands i am starting to get my hands dirty again having bought a s/h red GTi estate. It looked great on the surface, all original and lots of paperwork. Shame about the rot I found when I took the skirts off but £500 worth of welding has that sorted and now filled and sprayed with 50 notes worth of Waxoyl.

Slowly adding all the proper Ford mods (6-speed wipers etc.) but will essentially keep it stock and will stick with the tired 146k motor as it keeps up with the traffic, doesn't get me a ticket and averages 40+mpg!!

Mine would likely to be a very slow thread. And boring as I'm not treading any new ground. I guess I posted here simply to provide some moral support and appreciation to Lee. A great read and interesting to note how he feels now; the effort, the money etc.

I'm not that bothered any more. I learnt years ago if building a show car that there's always someone else who's done theirs better. And any excuse; they have more money, time, tools, garages, mates, magic dust whatever. But I am big into the nostalgia thing. Sort of Friends Reunited for cars. Can't be many of us oldies who haven't got a fav car from their past that they would love to have back again. Google, Youtube and ebay can help pass many a Winter evening.

So I might or might not pop back with a new thread next Summer with some updates and some votes of thanks to those who've helped me across the forums (gosh, never knew there were so many that covered Mk6 Escorts). But don't expect to see blinged-up super detailed engine bays and the like. It will just be nice to know that of the 50 or so GTI Estates left on the road, mine should be one of the nicer ones and getting its arse dirty every weekend when I go off fishing (my other love).
