Its the trumpet effect! megaphone effect! if u seal the tip on at the front of it,the gas/noise comes out of the tailpipe and into a large diameter pipe for an inch or two where the sound is amplified in the same way that a trumpet end amplifies the noise of u blowing down said trumpet! for it to work best u wanna fit it and seal it tight so ALL the exhaust gas enters the tip and travels quite a way down it.
