Given the choice between Turbo Diesel and Turbo Petrol, I would pick Petrol!! I own a Fabia vRS with the VAG group 1.9TDi engine, and have test driven a couple of Octavia vRS with the VAG group 1.8T engine! The TDI is more torquey, which makes for great motorway driving and overtaking! The power comes in one big lump and throws you in the back of the seat! You can floor it at 2000RPM and you get a big surge of power but it soon runs out of puff and you change up at about 3500RPM (which is fine when overtaking but not good from a standing start!) and its not exactly a refined engine and the weight effects the handling! The 1.8T however, its MUCH more refined, which a smooth power delivery right up to the redline. Where the TDI feels quick with the torque, the 1.8T IS quick! Have only test driven a couple so can't comment a great deal but was a MUCH nicer engine to drive with than the TDI. Economy though, the TDI's take AGES to warm up so not great for short winter journeys or clearing the screen with the blowers but its a diesel so go on forever when warmed up! The 1.8T is more economical than I thought (according to Parkers its better than a Focus ST170 and a few other N/A alternatives with similar BHP figures!) so shouldn't be much difference than a 2.0 Escort. Maybe even better!
