hi guys and gals ok i have a quick qustion whih u might b able 2 shed some light on ive just bought a mk5 now i can get neither reverse or 5th and the other gears all seam 2 b out of place now this lends me 2 belive its the gear linkige can any one tell me if this is a common problem on the mk5 or heard of it before

could be the linkage just needs adjusting, do u know if the box has been out recently? if it's been off and put back on wrong then it could just be a case of loosen the pinch bolt and move the gear stick slightly one way or the other.

YEAH GONNA GIVE AJUSTMENT A GO AS THEY ALL SEAM 2 B ALL OVER THE SHOP JUST WONDRED IF THE LINKIGE GIVEING UP WAS A COMMON THEING ON THE MK5

dunno about the linkage giving up, it'd be pretty noticeble though if the linkage was that badly worn it would be sloppier than a cheap whore!

The linkage went on my old mkV and the stick just dropped thought the floor

Sounds like it just needs minor adjustment

...............or the gearbox is shagged and is going to die pretty soon, cause 5th and reverse where the first to die on mine before it fell appart.....................

 

welll tryed ajustment and thats done naff all so suppect box now

Heero Yuy u say 5 th and reverse were gone on yours right in thinking u could still get 1/4 but would not even go over far enough 2 get 5th and reverse

fucked................... and a nice big bill as well, and i think my clutch is starting to play up again...................

 

were u still able 2 get the gear leaver over far enough 2 select em but not ingauage 5th reverse?

Well most of the "cogs" in mine died as did the clutch and basicially all of the components at once, was a mess in their let me tell you, there was metal everywhere.............

 

And yes, i could change gear, however i couldnt use any gears at all........

a mate of mine had a mark 5.5. His gear box went at about 100k miles and it just went. No warning, pulled up to some lights, went to pull away, grind, tried again, grind. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, r. All dead. Had to be towed home by another mate.
