Steering wheel twitching

Recommended Posts

Right, over the last few days, my steering wheel has been twitching alot from left to right. From setting off, it will do it at low speeds until about 40mph. It also only does it when going straight as I can't feel it vibating when turning or stationary.

It's only started doing it after the other night when i took it for a trip down the M1 and after that I did hit a pothole at about 50ish but I have done that many times without problems. Checked PS fluid levels and they seem normal and one of the racks is under a year old. Any ideas people as I don't want the steering to pack up on the way to FITP??

Would a buckle be visual?

Not really Tom ,you could always try swapping the wheels from back to front to see if its still there ,failing that a joint could have given up on a wishbone or even tracking if you found a pothole

It could be:

bottom arm bushes

track rod ends

tyres

bottom arm

bottom ball joint

buckled wheel

steering rod

ARB bushes.....

Do as Steve suggested, try the back wheel on the front, while youhave the wheel off, check for any damage on the tyre (twists, deformaties). With the fine back wheel now on the front, if it still does it, look towards a suspension/steering component, if it doesnt do it, take you wheel for balaancing, tell the machine operator to look for any sort of buckle on the wheel.

The tyre pressure was quite low when I hit the pothole so will swap them over to see if if is a suspected buckled wheel. Just out of curiosity, how dangerous is it to drive on a buckled wheeen temporarily as i have no way of fixing it before FITP!!
