Craig855S
I wanna build a kitcar cos i love tinkering but hate having my car off the road for more than half a day at a time...and with a kitcar u can really spread the cost.. does anyone know anytning about Locost 7 kits? How much does it all cost? What car do u use as a donor (i hear cortina...but i doubt ill be able to get cortina bits from my local scrappy) so would modern ford bits fit? (thinking rs2000 front brakes under gti 15s)What engine should be used? zetec? if so is a 2.0 more than enough power? would a 1.6 one be rather quick? (90BHP in half a ton should be quite fast no?) Craig855S
yeah i know mate im just thinking of a few bits to have on my spec list and 260mm brakes at the front with 15s seem good,as does a zetec engine (but would i need ITBs and management or will all the escort inlet and ECU plumb in ok?) i know ill need a RWD gearbox and some kind of way to get the power to the back wheels (that may be where cortina bits come in as they were RWD yes?) what steering components do they use etc? im trying to join the locost builders forum but i have to phone to confirm my registration

nick_ov_uk
the normal ecu is used and inlet depends on the kit, where i would start is find the kit you want see what running gear fits. have a long think then start locost kits can be made for about £800 thats if you make your own chassis and make LOTS of things yourself. Danzetec
We are building ourselves what is commonly called a locost, which is basically a lotus 7, caterham, westfield, tiger type kitcar If you want to make from scratch then get this book and have a read http://www.haynes.co.uk/wcsstore/HaynesPublishing/images/Bookjackets/150scans/H4391.jpg You can also buy a chassis and work up from that, depends how much you want to purchase and how much you want to make really, but it is very time consuming We are setting up a shop on our website to sell kitcar components, but we can make whatever you need www.oweneng.co.uk How much does it all cost?It all depends on spec really, but you can get a reasonable spec with a lot of bargain hunting (and ebay) for reasonable money, it also depends how much of the work you do yourself too What car do u use as a donor (i hear cortina...but i doubt ill be able to get cortina bits from my local scrappy) so would modern ford bits fit? (thinking rs2000 front brakes under gti 15s)The sierra is prob the best donor atm, you should buy and strip a complete car to make it as cheap as possible because you will pay more from a breakers. The front hubs are often cortina and these are on ebay but replicas are being made so these are now easier to source. Sierra hubs can be used with an insert, which would make fitting rs2000 calipers easy but they may not be much better than std sierra? Also the xr4x4 has a limited slip rear diff which makes an affordable upgrade What engine should be used? zetec? if so is a 2.0 more than enough power? would a 1.6 one be rather quick? (90BHP in half a ton should be quite fast no?)Yeah the zetec engine bolts straight up to the sierras type 9 or mt75 'box. So you could do a 1.6 which initially would be a bit cheaper but you'd want a 2litre to bring the power:weight ratio up, theres a lot of tuning stuff out there for the 2 litre too What steering components do they use etc?The mk2 escort rack is the most commonly used Hope this helps, reading the haynes book will give you a much better idea of what to expect
Stu
It costs about £25k to build a westfield/caterham/etc to a low spec.
Craig855S
Stu,thats if u buy the parts NEW from caterham is it not? and just bolt it all together (ie/what top gear done) a guy on another forum i used to use was buiding a locost, got quite far and only spend just over a grand..he sold it before completion and built an anglia hot rod instead
