Buying A New Laptop

Recommended Posts

Right, I've got a laptop and it runs Vista. I've had it a while and let's just say I hate it.

So I'll probably get rid of it on eBay or something, but I wanted to know if I can still buy a new laptop anywhere which has XP installed on it?

PC World, Dixons, Staples, etc. all have laptops but they all come pre-installed with Vista as the OS.

And I don't really want to install XP on my current laptop because I'm guessing the drivers for the particular model won't be available for XP.

Does anyone have any decent suggestions??

pick a model of laptop, even if it comes with vista go to the support pages of the manufacturer and check under that model if they list xp drivers. If they do it will be compatible, if they don't then maybe stay away. I'd personalyl still buy a laptop which is shipped with vista so that in the future if need be you will have a licenced copy. Also in 3-4 years if you wanted to sell the laptop no-one will want an XP laptop by then but a vista one should sell easier.

yeh, shove xp on it. one of my pc's is running 64 bit xp :thumb: i dont, and wont use vista until its been tested for several years and they release at least 1 or 2 service packs for it!!

In that case then, it's been on pc's for 1 1/2 years at least, and has a service pack ;)

I honestly dont see the problem with vista

I'm just upgrading a aged network of 25 pc's (wan england/wales) with new systems with Vista, and Server 2008 servers...

Well this is my laptop, and here are the drivers online for the XP operating system:

Clicky

There doesn't seem to be any audio, video, graphics, etc. drivers so am I stuck with Vista then?

Doesn't mean your stuck with Vista...

Who says you need to use HP's site for drivers?

Look around... There will be XP drivers for your hardware...

"Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset Family Driver" will probably be covered in an Intel all-in-one driver pack.

GeForce/GeForce Mobile drivers are available from the nVidia website for most OSs

"Conexant High-Definition Audio Driver" Conexant should have released a XP driver or their site.

etc etc

Just need to do your homework, rob drivers from your current installation or rob the drivers from the probable "Restore" CD/DVD that will have come with the Laptop.

i see your point, but its still too early for me. 90% of vista owners i know (and thats a LOT!) have said they've regretted using or buying it. it looks nicer, and if its working it will run better etc. but that still doesnt convince me, i know mircosoft too well. i dont even trust service pack 3 for xp yet, and thats only been out barely a week or two lol! our systems at NWP and other forces which we support use xp because vista doesnt support (or at least stabley support) a HUGE amount of older or oldish systems, applications etc so we are staying where we are for the moment.
