Marcopolo
Is it possieble to do a VTEC conversion? I what to know how hard it would be to do, as me and a mate have been arguing about the matter for two weeks or so, I think it would be way to hard and would cost to much to... Does any one know the answer???
mousey
of course you could lol all youre doing is fitting an engine into the car and getting it running. hell we get engines running on stands at work, all wired up etc and im talking big lexus v8's etc. HOWEVER how difficult it is is another matter
Marcopolo
oh another thing, I been hearing from different places that the Zetec was develop by Honda, which I don't think is true, is it? Edited May 23, 2008 by Marcopolo
Craig855S
Main problem is..i believe the VTEC engines have the flywheel on the opposite side of the car, meaning the gearbox will be on the opposite side. However its possible,Ryan is working on a mini doing a vtec transplant with a guy from work.. it looks fun as the radiator and fan take up most of the engine bay,and the mini mini radiator prob wont be good enough to cool a high revving VTEC
mousey
the zetec was aided in devolpomednt by yamaha
Marcopolo
I thought it mite of been one of the Japanese lot... I've seen mini with a custom clubman front end before, I would think that would give up more room for the VTEC it was in one of the mini world mags back in 2003... Stu
Oh dear......... To answer your original question.. yes, anythings possible.. but on this instance I will say no, because it's simple not practical. I am assuming you don't really understand what VTEC is or what it does, or you most likely wouldn't have asked the question. Did you know the ST170 engine has variable intake cam timing? Infact it's superior to VTEC as it has a much wider remit of control. Now to clear up... oh another thing, I been hearing from different places that the Zetec was develop by Honda, which I don't think is true, is it?No. the zetec was aided in devolpomednt by yamahaThe Sigma engine was, which yes is called a Zetec, but certainly not what is in the discussion here. The Zetec 'E' or 'R' engine (including the ST170 and Focus RS) was developed from the CVH, by Ford and just Ford. The 1.6 zetec in the Focus was co-developed by Yamaha and Ford, but couldn't be more different.

Marcopolo
No you know the sort of pub argument, but I didn't think it was true anyways, my mate is a bit of a ballsh**er at times but that has sort that argument out cheers for that guys, my knowledge of engines inst very good but I know when I'm being ballsh**ed too.... ScORTED
just to add to the confusion honda developed the cvh and decided to sell it to ford and devleop its vtec engine instead. theres a 306 out there with a VTEC engine in it so its totally possible BUT - you'll never do it, you don't have the money (and if you do can i have some?) The radiator is actually an Escort type, just used to show give a rough layout. I wouldn't bother putting a VTEC in an Escort. Why not a ST170 engine? MikeyRS
i looked into this a while back, as stated, anything is pos. and the vtec conversion is a very good idea, considering you can have a stock 1.6 tec motor pumping out about 160bhp easy. the zetec engine is not as sophisticated as the vtec system. the japs are developing electronic valve lift now so the head will be totally electronic. they know their stuff. the vtec engines even cope very well with turboing, which is always a bonus with the vtec system
Stu
I was under the assumption that the question was 'can you fit `vtec` to a zetec engine?' - not can you transplant a honda ENGINE into an Escort... transplanting the whole engine would be a thousand times easier and cheaper than designing a vtec head for a zetec engine Edited May 24, 2008 by Stu
