Ok maybe another noobie question, ( BTW you guys are teaching me a lot recently )

I took apart my filter box yesterday and I ws wondering what the little sponge at the bottom of the filter is, mine seems to have a lot of crap on and seems to have oil on it. Anyone tell me what is it and if I should be worried about the fact it has oil on it. Filter is in need of changing away and I'm getting one at the weekend with the rest of the bits I need to fix the rust and other bits.

Cheers Guys

its the oil breather filter
And yes you do need it in there!!!! lol ya generaly get a new one when ya get a normal air filter.ya cant buyem separate.wich is a bugger.lol
i took mine out when i put the piperX on and it connected to the side, but now i have a stand alone filter. i dont think it makes much difference.

It does as it is the only breather to let air out of the engine. and if it aint in there and you have a bit of a problem and ya get oil through it it will be sucked straight back into the engine causin detination and running faults.also the reason why the original air box and kand ns have the breather int them is to ttake bk the fumes that the engine breathes bk into the engine and nt into the passenger compartment

so your saying my stand alone filter will cause issues? and i know the filter will make it smell

No not issus with runnin m8 just on the fumes side of things!basicaly the old little filter is to stop to much oil being breathed bk into the engine and to filter the air thats goin bk in to it to.so thats why ya need it if ya have a standard air box etc.but those fumes arnt the best thing to be breathin in m8 i had this on ma old cav mk2 gave me bad headaches whent o the docs and turned out to be a form of carbon monoxide poisonin. re ruted it to recurculate it bk into the engine and they slowly went. so just sayin be carful with stand alone air filters as they are universal and not the best option and those little breather filters dont realy do owt to stop this if ya put one on.

Never changed mine... partially disintegrated as it is.

Always told it was a crank case filter.

Will any old sponge do the trick? IE: cut up a pan sponge (minus the scrub bit) as it seems to be is a bit of everyday sponge.

Never done it like that mate spose its worth ago tho!

Reason I ant got my breather pipe going in to my air filter it makes it dirty, Also all the crap goes back down the inlet pipe then throttle body and injection system full of crap. Put little breather filter on now to stop the crap going everywere also the smells.

I wont connect the breather pipe up again ant worth the crap it causes.

its the crank case filter it vents off the blow by, as your engine wears the more oil you will see.

You only get it if you buy a filter from Fords - not Halfords and the like. It's to stop oil splattering up onto the air filter.
