Posted July 23, 200816 yr I can only hear it when driving, and its relative to engine speed and not wheel speed. After 3k it gets quite loud and ticks faster. It doesnt sound like tappets, and as far as im aware, you cant hear it outside the car. It sounds as if its coming through the dash? Any suggestions? Its so annoying!

July 23, 200816 yr Author Doesnt matter if the car isnt moving, only does it with engine speed, and it can do it on idle, its not alawys making the noise odly enough
July 23, 200816 yr Big-end bearings mate. SORT IT as I didn't and my con-rod shot out bottom of sump...and ended up scrapped.
July 23, 200816 yr Author The tensioners tick a little bit, but only really audible with the hood open.
July 23, 200816 yr Mine does this everytime it needs some oil it. Started doing it on monday so yesterday I drained the oil changed the filter and re-oiled and low and behold, no more ticking. Its done it a fair few times, even if lack of or dirty oil doesn't cause it certainly stops the egg timer under the bonnet.

July 23, 200816 yr right the reason why the tappets sound like that is cause they is always dirty oil in them, due to the hight tolarance in making them. no matter what cleaner or how many oil changes you do it will come back! only 2 ways to sort them 1. strip them down and clean (waste of time imo) or buy new, i hope this saves people a fortune.
