Okay this question probably gets asked every day, a million times....but.....

My 1.6Mk5b died yesterday (gearbox ate it's own reverse) so I'm getting a nice S plate 1.8 Escort Ghia on Monday. It currently has 105bhp, but how easy is it to convert to the 115bhp 1.8? Is it just ECU, injectors & throttle body or is there more to it?

Where else (other than escort 1.8) could I get the bits from? Do Mondy 1.8's have the 115bhp?

Sorry for lame dumbass question, but I'm power hungry on a budget!

Cheers

An S reg 1.8 should have the 115ps engine in because the 105 was killed off at the end of 96.

Got the number plate handy? i'll check what it had out the factory.

Not yet. I'm presuming it is the 105 and not the 115, since the air thing on top (black pipe) said 105, iirc.

Drove it today and it felt a lot more powerfull than my 90bhp escort.

Either would do.

Get me the number plate i will check the factory engine tomorrow morning.

But i'd be surprised if MCat says it had a 105 if the car really is S reg. kinda means its on another engine.

Always a possibility someone fitted a different one due to replacing a cone filter or damage.

As said, an S-Reg would definitely be the 115ps originally, and that engine doesn't have a pipe in that location anyway.

So must have had an older, not-so-good replacement engine chucked in there at some stage...

Get a 2.0 in there

We'll see on Monday. I'm just going by my own (disgraceful) memory. Maybe it's got the pipe along the backand side...i dunno....watch this space :)

Took delivery of it today and I'm impressed with it compared to my old Mk5b 1.6 zetec.

Not sure I can be doing with a cam swap yet, but if I just fit the 2.0 throttle body, will it make a difference, or do I need to use the cams also?

Also, the a/c needs a regas - it's cold, but hardly northern canada! Are the kits from halfords easy to use or is it worth just paying the extra and let kwikfit do it for me? I'm reasonably mechanically minded! I don't want to go and spend the money on a can of refridgerant if it's nigh on impossible to DIY

Cheers

Right:

2.0 TB don't do it, you won't make anymore power on it cheaply other than putting in a 2.0, or if its the 105 upgrading the bits to 115 (not sure what they are though)

I wouldn't touch the air-con system myself, take it to a garage to get done i saw somewhere around they'd recharge it for £30 can't remember where though

'Tis the 1.8 115ps engine

well then don't bother wasting your money with any bits for it, just be happy or get a 2.0 in there.
