Reet,

Coupled with all the problems currently going on with my car the back box is blowing... after a closer look it's rusting away... and the rear rubber support is showing it's ages meaning it's knocking against the spare wheel compartment.

The manifold, cat and centre pipe are all in good, working condition... looks like they were all replaced but not the back box.

Instead of a cheap-tastic special at a local garage... are there better back boxes out there for a 1.4?

I'm not talking about a Magnex or Powerflow...

Something that won't rust quickly and will look ok without the insurance getting bitchy (Hence no Magnex or Powerflow etc)

I don't need noise... and a bean can style exhaust is just going to make my car sound like a tractor...

So an insurance safe, stylish and practical exhaust as an alternative to a cheap piece of steel...? Possible and where?

I dont think so, you can get the likes of the GTi box, but id guess at a exhaust place there all going to be about the same :( just make sure it isnt one that turns down at the end

Well u probably want a stainless steel backbox as that will not rust as quickly as normal steel.

The problem is its hard to get a stainless steel exhaust that is like a standard ford one. Id get a cheap 3 inch round piper back box, can be had cheap second hand or about 120 brand new. It will be fairlly quiet but you will get an increase in noise as you get with most stainless exhausts.

Problem is insurance would claim the backbox as a "performance" mod so up goes your premium.

if you dont want noise then just get a standard straight cut exhaust and an exhaust tail pipe trim, but you need to go stainless really if you want it to last a long time
just get a new straight cut one and go to the likes of powerflow and get them to weld a tip on,a new standard box will probably outlast your ownership.
Go to powerflow and ask for a silent, standard looking exhaust :)

Problem is they will rob him of £180 lol

Nope got quoted for a power flow back box £120 fitted, then i came across this .. £30 form a mate and POWERFLOW charged me £10 to fit it for me. SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET.

i had the same problem phil, my rusted away got a lil hole init and the baffles went so was rattleing like a mare, a normal exhasut fitted from and exhust place was nearly £100 so u best of with a perfrmaonce one mate, expsech power flow, stainless ect..

Only problem with performance exhausts is that the insurance will make sure I can't walk for months when they are finished with my ass.

A customised Gti exhaust? or am I just spotting performance exhausts when I look at Gti's?

Not sure which way my insurance company will go with a "performance enhancing" Ford part... they are fine with Ford cosmetic parts.

I have an RS2k back box on mine

slightly refurbed...

Anything that they deem is performance enhancing will up your premium, ford part or not.

So until I'm 21 and have at least 1year ncb under my belt... a cheaptastic exhaust with a bolt on tip... :pancake:

tbh an exhaust shouldnt add much to your insurance premium

If I put a non-Ford air freshener in the car I'd get raped.

My insurance has told me that Ford cosmetic parts they are fine with and they expect 1-2 non-Ford cosmetic parts (Like Halfords alloys...).

But a big no to the likes of bodykits and performance mods.

Which is why I was hoping there was something like a Ford stainless steel exhaust back box made for a 1.4.

tbh a standard back box is going to cost me less than an exhaust tip anyway.

I've got a mate in an exhaust place who could do a full setup for pennies if I self fit.

I've only got to wait until December before I can start playing with mods like this.

You don't ask... You don't get! :thumb:
