Lee_2f2f
Simple question really... how does changing the air filter to a K&N or otherwise help the engine to perform better?? and also.......... what can running the car without one do to the engine? Stu
In theory the aftermarket air filters flow more air.. they achieve this by letting more crap though.. all aftermarket air filters will increase engine wear rate, although most likely not to a noticeable amount in the lifetime you'd own the car.. Not running one risks wiping out your engine..
Lee_2f2f
What if....... I just Drilled the airbox? does different air filters (I.E Performance) or Drilling the standard airbox actually increase performance slightly? will it help it pull away a bit faster from a stand still? and would it help it getting up hills?? (I really dont know sorry)
Stu
No, no performance increase. Not on a n/a Escort!
Lee_2f2f
lol, It is for the Corsa... its shite at climbing hills, so I'm trying to figure a way to give it a bit more Pull??? thought the air filter would help it along? Any Ideas what could help the car Stu?
smithyandco
Dump the car at the nearest Vauxhall dealer and buy a diesel (not a diesel Corsa (ie: 1.3TD)... they couldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding never mind pull themselves up a hill! ScORTED
the 1.3CDTi is pants but its a lot faster tha nthe pug 1.5D - i've experienced the pain of both and lee perhaps something like a remap will help your car pull better, or failing that get a longer run up
danposs86
Drilling the air box or fitting an aftermarket air filter will increase the noise, which in turn will have a placebo effect for the driver.
ScORTED
sadly the placebo effect/noise increases fuel consumption
Lee_2f2f
lee perhaps something like a remap will help your car pull better, or failing that get a longer run up HaHa! longer run up is what I try, I went to southampton not long ago, I floored it down hill ready to go up the next hill.. reached a certain speed and then as soon as the hill arrived.. by the time I got to the top I had lost 15mph. so a run up is a FAIL. I am thick when it comes to mechanics really... whats a remap? is it the ECU getting tuned or something? Drilling the air box or fitting an aftermarket air filter will increase the noise, which in turn will have a placebo effect for the driver. Nice. smithyandco
the 1.3CDTi is pants but its a lot faster tha nthe pug 1.5D - i've experienced the pain of both and lee perhaps something like a remap will help your car pull better, or failing that get a longer run up I have to disagree... The 1.3TD Corsa I tried felt like a 900cc Matiz engine in an Iveco 7.5Tonne truck... (Petrol models didn't feel much better)The 106 is light... So the 1.5D pulls quite well... It's not quick but hills are no problem... I could reach 80-90 (If I was stupid enough to try and break the law) by the end of an adverage motorway ramp and maintain treble figures on the speedo all day long (Again if I wanted to be stupid enough). The only let downs being no turbo and a low rev band to play with... So it will smoke most hatches and normal saloons at the lights for about 10 seconds before you lose torque due to lack of turbo or hit the rev limiter and get left behind... But still... better than a Corsa!Handles better too! Remapping would be expensive... Would be cheaper to buy a work horse diesel of cheapness for all these hills... I'm guessing your car is petrol(usually have all there power and torque mid to high range)... so finding the rev range for peak power/torque would be a good idea... then keeping within that range on hills... ScORTED
a remap is indeed ecu tuning lee, give some vaux tuners a ring see if theres any gains to be had... and ignore phillip he's got "whatever car I have is the best car in the world syndrome"
smithyandco
a remap is indeed ecu tuning lee, give some vaux tuners a ring see if theres any gains to be had... and ignore phillip he's got "whatever car I have is the best car in the world syndrome"I don't! I know my 106 is slow... but lightness, smallness and plenty of low end torque to play with makes it seem quick...I can't keep up with many cars but I can out accelerate some at lights purely due to torque... untill they reach their power/torque peak and it's bye bye with me left behind chugging along like a 1970s John Deere... Like I mentioned above! I'm just trying to convert someone else to the devils fuel! Look what engine type wins at LeMans everytime... And *ehem...* Edited April 16, 2009 by phil-smith.tk
