hey buddy,

i have wanted to be a tattooist for about 3 year or so now, unfortunatley i have kicked it to the dust a bit and after many a discusion i have found that its easier and more constuctive of my time to study architecture instead! so here i am with 7 years left 3 years in!

the only way you will get anywhere is by getting yourself a apprenticeship. These are like hens teeth, i recently got to know a girl who has just been accepted as a apprentice by my tattooist over my way in kent.

I was shocked to see that any decent tattooists like Robert Hernandez, Guy Atkinson, Shige, Nyiri Sandor, Yoni Zilber and the likes studied Fine art at BA level. I just thought they were ghetto kids which started doing them in thier bedrooms and just got damn good at it but i was well and truly wrong.

If you want to go for it then go for it but dont get into flash tattooing, this is Shite which you pick off of a wall and any decent tattooist will not gve you a second look. Find some thing which you want to specalise in and stick at it. There are so many genres to chose from, if you like charachter drawing then why not look at one of my personal faourites Nyiri Sandor, they specalise in very detailed photo like potraits or possibly even Robert Hernandez who is truley awsome, I have seen many of his works in the flesh and hey are truley awsome, My tattooist has a bio-mech hand and 3 skull potrats across his lower stomach from him.

I think you will agree this dude is sick!

If you want it mate then go for it but to get something in a reputable studio will be a bloody hard job but not impossible! Work in a sepecific genre and work with a wide range of media. Also get reaserching artists and styles as its always nice to be able to drop some names and show people your serious. I often hear of youngsters who want to do it and they just dont seem to have a clue! You want to be able to stand out

cheers mate, nice bit of reading there

it will be a while before anything comes to light, need to brush up a bit more on my drawing first. i prefer to try do things free hand and adapt it to me more than straight copying.

no problem!

If you want it stick at it and it will happen!

Deffinatley dont copy but if you see a clear style/method you like working with than stick at it! But all the same if there is some thig you dont like stick it out as you will be supprised how well you can develop!

How about taking a summer course in 2D? about 6-8weeks of uni work will see youbuild up a very nice portfolio and you will find your true calling and you can therefore work on that area more? and also as said before that will also make you stand out from the rest!

i will get into this one day! i might be 50 but it will one day happen! I would love to be able to work in a enviroment where my sleeves would not matter and i think the only suitable place of work would be a tattoo studio!
