claying is best to be done before using compounds on your paintwork imo

as it takes all the surface crap off, so you not just rubbing crap around mixed in with the compound on your paintwork

thats what i was told aswell, the clay takes all the little particles of crap away so that when you polish you arnt dragging them over the bodywork causing swirls etc

but the compound itself is hard and gritty.......

thats a true statement

but it doesn't do much good, if you have tar spots you might of missed without claying

the tar bits get onto the surface of your microfibre and you just rubbing into the paint

the best results are made on the cleanest surface

I wouldnt be using G3 if you are just trying to freshen up the paintwork, its a hardcore product, not really designed for using as a regular polish. You want something like Menzerna PO85RD.302 (or the more recent version of it) and that will be abrasive enough to bring up the paintwork, but not enough to tear it to pieces like the G3 would.
