Hey everyone, I'm new on here, had a quick look around and am already jealous of everyone's Escorts - mine's a bit of a tip right now :(

Basically, I'm looking for help/advice please. My Mk5 1993 Escort has never been exactly economical (when I first bought it secondhand a few years ago it was averaging 30mpg, then it somehow decreased to about 25mpg) but recently it's been averaging like.. 10mpg?

Now I'll readily admit that I know nothing about cars whatsoever. But I know that I can't afford to continue running my car in this state :( I've booked it into the garage tomorrow morning for a sort of diagnosis but I only have about £50 spare to pay for any repairs - not very likely.

I guess my question would be.. does anyone know any common reasons in Escorts for low mpg or if there's just something majorly wrong with my car? And how would low mpg be fixed, and is it going to cost me a million pounds?? I'm going to have to sell it or scrap it at this rate, but I love my car and don't want to do this!

Thanks (and sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum)

Liv

could be the timing

It could be many things tbh. I had this problem on my GTI and it turned out to be the Lambda sensor, it cost me about £80 to get sorted out... after that it was all good. Hope ya get it sorted!

could need a good service

Thanks for the help, hopefully mine will be a similar problem and will cost a similar amount.. shame this is all happening three weeks before payday!

cdf_scort - yeah, i think you're right.. the MOT is april so it's been a while, i had to get the exhaust replaced last week too so i think the entire car has just decided to fall apart now, ha.

its a escort so more than likely

i thought i'd edited my last post, oh well. was just adding that since last april, it hasn't had a full service, just a few repairs here and there. think there is an electrical problem somewhere too, or a fuse or something, as the radio and a few dashboard lights aren't working. really wish i knew more about cars, heh.
could be a fuse mate

I may have missed it but cant see what engine you have?

cvh, zetec/dohc

1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8?

could be the timing

And how would you go about adjusting this?

service (unless you have done ALOT of miles since shouldnt be a prob if it was that recent (5 months ago) what are you averaging miles to a tank? my mk5 1.6 cvh was around 250-300 depending how i drove, at 10mpg you must be getting what, 80 miles to a tank? id find that hard to believe lol

peewee - my fault, didn't say what engine it is, it's 1.4 but i'll be honest and say i have no idea what cvh, zetec etc are or whether my engine is any of them. sorry!

kniterider - since april i have done a reasonable amount of miles - my family live all over the UK and i visit them quite often. i'm not sure about miles per tank as i can never afford to fill it up, hah, but for the past few weeks £10 gets me about 25 miles.. so working it out i'd assume that a full tank would get me about 100 miles.

thanks for the help and advice everyone - i dropped the car off at the garage this morning and he said that the fuel emissions were ridiculous and it's costing me £105 in total to fix it, which is more than i'd hoped but will save a lot of petrol money, hopefully!

at least your doing the sensible thing and getting it looked at by a garage, we could suggest you change everything at a cost of probably £150 and it still be wrong!

what did they say were wrong with it?

i thought my first mk6 was bad at 200 miles to a tank! lol
