Still looking into the 2L conversion, but want to keep PATS if possible. As per title, just wondering if I could run the 2L silvertop from a later 2L blacktop ecu. I know that the whole wiring loom would need splicing together to get it to work, but would I get running problems?

Problem i've found from personal testing is the Mondeo PATS system is not the same as Escort so you'd have to replace the receiver in the steering column and anything associated with it for a chance for it to work. Not sure if this is the same with EEC-V as i've only tested it on EEC-IV variants.

I took a ~1997 2L Mondeo ECU with internal PATS and had it reset back to factory settings so that it would recognise the first three keys inserted and hard code these into the ECU. This would not work on the Escort using the Escort receiver/loom and a Mondeo ECU. There are some slight pin-out differences with the PATS systems, some have more wires than others and they're not compatible.

If you want PATS for insurance reasons then fair enough, have a go, but if you just want an immobilisor then I can tell you other ways to do it that'd potentially save you a headache.

The reason I asked is that I have the chance of getting the entire engine/ecu loom including PATS transceiver and keys from a scrapper. I already have a silvertop built ready to go in, but the scrapper has a blacktop.

The question I'm really asking is whether the mapping in the blacktop ecu is massively different from what is needed for a silvertop?

Mapping in what sense?

Whether the timing/fueling maps in a 2L blacktop ecu are the same/similar to the maps in a 2L silvertop ecu, or will the engine blow up or the cat melt?

If you want it right then go for the correct ECU.

I couldn't make my mind up if it would be OK, but yes, you're right - I should probably stick to Fords engine/ecu pairings.

The calibrations are different so if you're concerned about things like cat health and longevity I wouldn't risk it.
