1. chock back wheels and lift front onto stands.

2. remove both front wheels.

3. disengage the spindle carrier (hub) from the lower arm ball joint

4. cut the two metal retainer straps securing the cv boots to both the spindle carrier and gearbox .

(be careful not to cut the rubber of the boots as if there both in good shape they can be re-used)

5. slide both cv boots to the centre of the driveshaft (you dont have to cut the two smaller retaining straps)

6. pull the spindle carrier away from the car until the wheel end of the driveshaft disengages and clears the cv joint entirely

7. pull the driveshaft out away from the car to disengage from the gearbox

(a container to catch any escaping gearbox oil might be advisable)

AFAIK aslong as the driveshafts are swapped between similiar engine types the litrage souldnt be an issue.

eg: zetec - zetec, cvh - cvh etc

cheers shaw :thumb: ur a star!!!
If you need a hand doing it mate, give me a shout
get a lever bar to remove the shaft from the box, there a right pain from what i remember.

nar tez, the both ends of the driveshaft are jointed in exactly the same technique, technically speaking the driveshafts aern't fastened in place atall and instead are held in position by lower arm ball joint not allowing horizontal movement of the spindle carrier and engine gearbox mounts not allowing the gearbox similiar movement.

therefore once youve got the cv boots detached from the carrier and gearbox the driveshaft should simply pull out the gearbox cv joint, I think you may actually be referring to the gearbox end cvjoint however and its true enough there a pain in the ricter to disengage from the box but aslong as he's just replacing the shafts theres no need to remove the g/b cv joint atall :thumb: .

also I forgot to mention on my first response,

its easier to disengage the gearbox end first by leaving the carrier end cv boot on until the box ends free, it allows you to pull the spindle carrier itself to pop the gearbox end out ;)

cheers again... and wayne.. i wont be doing it myself mate...(but cheers anyway ;) ) im just asking as i may have to remove one from the scrappers!!

My offer still stands if you need a hand

ill advise doing one side at a time,

make sure you have the drive shaft straight whilst trying to pop it as they rest inside on a circlular ring which sits on a slight cut out on the shaft, hard to explain, if you dont have the drive shaft straight it can be a absolute pain in the arse removing it

Escorts dont have a circular ring on the shaft?

if you mean the circlip that holds the driveshaft tripod bearings onto the driveshaft ends then yes there is one, but it has no function concerning driveshaft removal.

Id like to re-iterate.....thers NO reason to remove either cv joints from the hub or the gearbox (the latter would only result in your gearbox dumping its guts on your driveway/garage floor anyway  ).

The below diagram displays a basic exploded image of the driveshafts and relevant parts, the two circlips I think Heavyrightfoot is referring to are the ones indicated with blue arrows and have no bearing on the removal of the driveshafts themselves :thumb:

I was also referring to the earlier type Escorts which people sometimes get confused with, as you had to remove the shaft completely, which did have a small circlip

I think the diagram you have put up fully explains this, and is very useful to people when explaining

think I recall the kind your referring too, mk3's had them, right pain in the arsse to dislodge when removing the shafts too.

thank god ford changed the spec in later models

Like i said its very hard to explain, best way i can explain it is as follows, the pic above kindly put on by shaw dreamer is great,

Right the clip im on about sits actually inside the gear box, all drive shafts on escorts ive come across has them aswell as other makes and models.

whilst trying to pry the inner cv joint it will be hard because these is a metal ring/clip that sits round the shaft inside the box, thats why i say the drive shaft has to be straight to make life easier, if unclip the CV Boot, then be careful because the tripod bearings can pop, then you will have a nightmare repacking the bearings on the runners.

The way i describe it may seem hard to understand but i aint very good at explaining things

And i havent got a clue how to upload a pic i made to show what i mean
