Evenin all. Yet another problem has arisen. Replaced my NSR and NSF wheel bearing as they both worn out. When doing the bearing i thought that i would check my box ooil level whilst on the ramp, to find it had next to no oil. SO, i toppped the oil level up and now i am getting another bearing noise when i drive along from 30 mph upwards but seems to quiten down a bit at about 80 -90 mph and gets quieter when turning left a bit. Also when you pull away hard and llet offf the throttle it pulls to the left, but it has had the treacking checked and new bottom arms not too long ago, it is lowered 40mm on gmax shocks and springs and the car looks like it has had a hard 118000 miles.Possible it could be the diff bearings???

Need to get it sorted as it is a: driving me nuts and b: worried something is going to go wrong on the motorway......big style

How did you check the gearbox level??

Could be the cv joints

if it was a bearing in the box youd be able to hear it in a certain gear more??

i checked by shoving my little finger into the fill hole and found no oil so i topped it up and it took just over a litre! Not sure bout box bearing, should a 1.8 130bhp have a gearbox that lookds similar to that found on a cvh engine? i thought it should have a mtx75 box?

box oil should only just be below the level of the actual fill hole to be correct but as you just said it was up on ramps chances and you'd have never gotten a true level that way.

btw......... you must have a pinky finger like a burd!

also, as youve radically disturbed the running gear and suspension during a bearing change you'll very very likely need the tracking done, which coincidently in severe cases can account for one side pulling more as you described during heavy acceleration. :thumb:

the bearing noise could be the box thrust bearing packing in, tho its also interesting to note that the box makes excessive noise if the oil is low AND if the oil is to high (so again you may have overfilled your box!), to accertion its not the first possibility, have the car level and pop the box fill plug, if oil comes out let it!, as it'll drain until it reaches its correct level anyway :thumb: :thumb:

The MTX will be a big box, with pipe going in from the brake fluid res for the slave cylinder. It should also have subframe.

I did exactly the same thing on my old 1.4 a few years ago, did both wheel bearings on the front to find it was one of the bearings in the box whining away
its common on the escort IB5's, one of the bearings go's and its usualy heard through 1st gear more so than any other gears
