Hey guys

We have a few problems with my step dads Mondeo.

Now the car as been taken to a garage and the garage basically said the turbo has had it and they want to charge him £300 or so. I have searched about and found a thread on another forum relating to "cold advance solenoid" which seems to coincide with the problems of his car.

The car symptoms include kangarooing at lower speeds (traffic crawling), and when building speed the turbo will also be a bit iffy in the sense that it will either nothing will happen or you’ll pushed into the back of your seat from the force.

Any help would be appreciated as well as tips on checking / replacing the solenoid

Thanks.

Check the pipe that runs from the turbo to the injector pump, it will be a metal pipe with a rubber bit on the end that connects to the boost compensator on the front of the pump. The rubber splits and then the compensator can't open because it's not getting the pressure from the turbo, if this happens you won't get the extra fuel that's needed when you're on boost. Also pull the pipe off and look for signs of diesel, if it is wet then you need a new boost compensator diaphragm. By the way, to test the advance solenoid, turn the ignition to position 2 and listen for a series of clicks, it should be about 10 click really fast if it's working correctly.
