you dont they are self adjusting

you may need new brake shoe's or new self adjuster you wont realy know untill you take the drums off

wot tools do i need to take the drums off and wot im i looking for once they r off. i know it is not the handbrake cable cos it not that old

Pull back hand brake gaitor and de-adjust the handbrake

jack car up

support on stands

remove wheel

undo 32mm hub nut

prize the drum off

use sand paper and roughen the shoes and inside the drum

spray plenty brake cleaner inside

Check to make sure cylinder isnt leaking

Using a flat head screw driver u can prize the shoes apart, there is an adjuster there with teath on it, you wanna prize the shoes apart

put drum back on briefly and go put ur foot on the pedal to settle the shoes (make sure you have both drums on as u will pop a cylinder if one side is off)

try to spin the drum, try adjust it till u have a slight bind on the brakes.

Once done both sides do the hub nut back up, use a big flat head and put a notch in the hub nut again.

wheels back on

adjust hand brake by the gaitor till u have 3-5 clicks on the hand brake

r u sure its a 32mm and not like a 29/30mm
some escorts are 32 mm and some are 30 mm, sorry mate mine is 32mm

You could save yourself possible aggro and bearing disturbance, by simply removing the four bolts on the backplate holding the stub axle in place.

Once they're off, the drum comes off just as easy as the other way, but without any disturbance to the bearings in the drum.

i wouldnt do that, due to the fact ud have to Fcuk around lining the bolt holes back up. It doesnt matter if u disturb the bearing, as long as its all greased up with no rubbish on it, it wont affect performance at all

Can't say I've ever found that a problem myself!

...But even if folk do, they could always just stick a couple of bits of spare dowel in the holes in the stub axle to get it all lined up.

dont get me wrong mate ur way can be done, but looking at it logically your actually doing more work. The way i do it is by leaving the wheel on, undo the 30-32mm bolt, jiggle the drum off adjust up, clean up, refit job done.

Thats the easiest way to do it, lol each have there own way of doing things

Aye ... Snapped 2 bolts in the Spindle when I removed the whole set up ..

Just an Idea ... Streched Handbrake cable mate >?<

FYI: 30mm rear hub nut on my 97 GTi .. But like 4x4 said they vary ..

|I would presonally remove the drum as above ..
