I have a 1999 Escort finesse 1.6. On the plastic pipe which runs from the air filter to the engine, there is a sensor screwed into the centre of it and I have broken the wires. Car still runs fine and there are no dash lights on

Anyone know what the sensor is?

sounds like the MAF to me? is it on a metal bracket on the pipe that comes out of the air box? you need to replace it as the car wont run "properly" its running on a backup map.

the wires you broke (if the ones i think it is) run the Mass Air Flow sensor which tells the ECU what air it is taking in/needs etc.

the car will be running on a factory setting which will mean its not running efficiantly.

its not that. Its a lot further up the plastic pipe. About 30cm up from the air flow meter

can u put a circle on this pic and post it back up? only thing i can think of off the top of my head is the sensor at the back just before the pipe goes intot he throttle body?

i cant circle it at work as i cant access any programs to do it, but its the one directly underneath the passenger wiper arm fixing.

Inlet Air Temperature sensor (IAT sensor)

im not sure exactly but it may effect starting in cold weather or cause the car to run to rich when it warms up.
