joeuk1973
Hi, I have a 1.6LX Escort on a p 1996. The problem i am having is that first thing when engine is cold is that it starts first time everytime, yet, if i drive 100 yards and let the car idle ie pulling up to a junction etc, it cuts out, it starts again, eventually, then goes........this only happens when the engine is cold, if i let the car warm for 5 minutes its fine, but, its just an annoyance. Now i have changed the sparks the leads and even the air mass meter to no avail sad.gif Can anyone please help me diagnose what the problem is. ganges
I do not pretend to be an expert, but it might be the lamber sensor, but if it is only doing it when cold, then ummmmm not sure, just thinking out loud

The Badger
It could be your idle air control valve, ICV. Do the revs go up and down at all, usually when the clutch is depressed? Edited February 4, 2010 by The Badger
bigstinka
make ssure you are using 5w30 oil. it really can affect the running especially when cold.
stevmo3691
i have exact same problem on my 97 1.8 ghia x. have a whole list of things to check (just need some decent weather and light). when i find out problem i will be sure to let you know. what i'm doing atm is warming car up before i drive off. sit at a fast idle (2000 rpm) for 2 mins and it'll be ok, not perfect but alot better. also to re-start quicker, blip throttle, gets fuel in easier so starts better

waynegc123
Don't know if this will help, I'm new to this forum so Hi, I live in South Africa, have a mk6 escort sport(1.6 zetec) when cold running with normal oil here (20-50) the car used to get sticky valves and also cuts out if its cold,so I started to use 0-40 ,and that helped a bit for me,but swoped the 1.6 for a 2.0 mondy engine,oh happy days I would try cleaning out the throttle body and ICV. Hi yeah the idle control valvew didn't solve it so am getting a second hand throttle body so hope this is it.
