sidrick
Probably worth using the search function for the 478563489567834629653456574565734534564657432356473574234365574436234545685435234465443653254154656345231455416473568443623655446583645364665836544366 topics on this
SLEEMAN
some say its pointless as the st170 gearbox has close ratio gears, probably worth investing in some longer ratio gears from quaife!

SLEEMAN
do you want the engine screaming at 3-4000rpm doing 70-80 on the motorway? i'd rather not plus it would be ecomonic to have longer gear ratios saves on fuel! close ratio boxes i think are better for racing and rallying! Er.. hello.. ST170 is 6 speed..
SLEEMAN
i know its 6 speed! but i have read in fast ford a couple of times especially in recent issues that its pointless putting one in an escort unless it REALLY needs it like i dunno if you have 2-300bhp! plus the fact that theres custom mounts, welding etc put it this way putting an st170 box in would cost more than putting that turbo engine in your car kris if done by a pro. some people have done it in fiesta mk3's because its easy to do in them! i would go for a fully uprated ib5 box with LSD kris having 6 gears in an escort would be brilliant but for the cost of getting the parts and getting it fitted would just literally kill your wallet! dutchkev
my 5 speed sits at 3k at 70mph
bluliz
my 5 speed sits at 3k at 70mph 6th gear @3k rpm = circa 70mph. From my experience of owning an escort 1.8 at the same time as an ST170, 2nd gear has a very similar ratio to the 2nd in the 5speed box, both about 10mph per 1k rpm. 3rd is shorter as is 4th. Not 100% sure on that though. SortedFord has a clean St170 box he may sell...
tezmanian devil
get a mtx75, all bolt on, cheaper, stronger and easier to fit
Hezz
do you want the engine screaming at 3-4000rpm doing 70-80 on the motorway? most cars do them sort of rpms at those speeds hardly redlining is it!
SLEEMAN
but not good on fuel though! if i could i would make sure the car revs around 2k at 75 or 80 so therefore within legal limit and saving on fuel!
