Good Escort experience :)

Thought i'd share my little driving dilemma/story with you lot.

Tonight I had to drive the Escort home from Norwich to Essex, as i'm picking up my impulse-buy E30 320i Touring tomorrow!

The BM is hopefully going to be a project over the next few months, ironing out the known faults such as dodgy central locking, but is going to be an eventual replacement for my Scort.

Up until tonight, i've been looking forward to getting out of the Escort. It's rusting around me, the suspension is too low, the bumper is falling off and every bolt I try and undo seems to shear itself off. But my drive home was so enjoyable, I've started to wonder if i've made a mistake!!!

The roads were lovely and clear, with only a few trucks and cars littered down the 50 miles of single carriageway between Norwich and Ipswich. She's only a 1.6 Zetec, but I forgot how nicely the Scort accelerates through the revs, and how well it handles on the sports shocks and springs. Apart from the occasional arch-scrape it felt really precise, almost German :P The standard stereo was lovely and bassy with a good bit of Pendulum driving me on, and the interior is comfy as anything. It even performed well on the dual carriageway, happily sitting at 3k RPM at 75. It's my first car and I suddenly don't want to let it go! Every overtake put a smile on my face, and made me a little more guilty...

I hope driving the BMW home reminds me why I've bought it, otherwise it might get sold on a little quicker than expected! Long live the Escort <3

What a story bud, good news the old bird still makes you smile. I have been tempted a few times to change from the good old Ford to something a bit more reliable and a bit faster but to me the fixing of her is part of owning an Escort and I enjoy it. It's a great feeling when you fix something that is broken, from a little light to and engine.

Long live the Escort indeed!!!

I despise that with the Escort. You simply do not get that with German cars. In my early car years when all I knew was Fords, I thought every bolt was designed to seize, round then eventually shear.

On a side note, I don't want to pee on your parade, but I'm not sure how much of a fantastic driving experience you'll get from a 20 year old estate.

i think its all to do with sentiment more than anything - i didnt want to trade my hatch in for a derv as i missed how quiet it was and how smooth the "acceleration" was, but once i got in the derv i loved every second of it.

you always get it with your first car, weather it be a 1.6 escort, a 1.3 nova or anything else

I'll second the last statement, even later 3 series arn't that good, for a proper german driving machine you really want an 88-96 audi coupe 5 or 6 cylinder or an audi 90.

I still miss some things about my last escort. Steering and gearchange where better than my volvo, and the standard 6000 stereo though aftermarket speakers was fantastic, Si wingbacks were supportive...

But...The volvo is faster, with a better stereo (Its completely standard) and the interior is comfier and a nicer place to be but the seats dont hold you still like Sports seats do, theyre more like a nice comfy sofa

Yeah, the E30 is older than your Escort.

I personally wouldn't touch anything before an E36.

The E30 is a lot better built than the E36 and E46. Honestly.

Sadly many have been owned by at least a couple of EVO-esque owners over the years, and are showing the signs.

Hmm... really? I've only driven an E36 and E46 to be fair.

I really should get some pictures of my motor on here, haven't had the Escort for a while now.

I miss my Escort too, I literally put my blood, sweat and tears into that car. But times move on...

Well, the 320 made it home! And I have to say, i'm in love.

The 2 litre straight-six is absolutely sexual. I've never driven a 6 pot before, and the burbling noise just made me want to sex wee. She's ratty as anything, but has so much character. Never faltered, never coughed, never lurched. Even managed 30 MPG!

Shall I make a SUYM thread about her?
