Saunders
Well, im looking at buying my new phone contract soon. Already know the phone. HTC Touch HD 2. But, my question is this. On the tariff there is no mention of free internet etc, now I won't be using mobile internet. But wondered, will I be charged for using my home/friends/work Wi-Fi? Haych
not at all fella - wi-fi is in effect free
Lee_2f2f
As above, the Wi-Fi is nothing to do with your phones network whatsoever so you will not be charged.
Saunders
Good, that's what I thought. But when googled it, got a few results(I think American so could be the reason) saying they were getting charged because the data would go through a AT&T Data server. Thanks guys

daddycool
i have a iphone 12 months unlimited internet O2 sim card spare somewhere, they go for about £30 on ebay,They should work in any phone and all u do is top up £10 once and u recieve free internet for 12months weather u have credit or not which is great. not at all fella - wi-fi is in effect free they do get charged in US.They have very bad networking
Stu
Modern smartphones like to have a permanent internet connection to do various things, so when you're not on a wifi network it will try and use your GPRS/3G connection to do web things. This will cost you if you don't have a data package. they do get charged in US.They have very bad networking I think some people are getting confused as to what wifi is. You don't get charged for wifi unless you're connecting to a public wifi service (eg a BT hotspot)...
Saunders
Ok Stu. I'd only be connecting at home etc and networks I know, which I won't have to pay any subscription too (e.g Hotspots as mentioned) But, with regards to your first statement. Is it possible for me to stop this? Or will it run a bill up on my contract?
Lee_2f2f
If it is the HTC Touch you are getting, then yes, you can stop it mate, there is an option 'Com manager' and you can disable Data connections. (I have the HTC Touch Pro 2)
Saunders
Excellent. Thanks for your help guys. What do you think of it Lee? You use WiFi much? I've read good reviews on it. And I like the look of it. I know ours our different models. But what is your general feedback?
Saunders
Decided to go for a contract with "Unlimited" Internet allowance. Unlimited being 500mb, this is plenty, right?

andaba
Yep. Unless you're tethering a laptop to it, you'll never reach 500mb!Have you got the handset yet? If so, what do you think of it? I'm trying to decide whether I like mine as much as my old iPhone...
Saunders
Yeah, I have the handset. Seems to be good so far, just getting used to it, so it's frustrating when I do something by accident! I was just worried about the internet, as its a smartphone it's always trying to connect, so I cancel it when I can. My girlfriend has an iPhone I always used to be on, I think when the right apps start coming out for this it will be so much better. Apart from the fact the iPhone obviously acts as an iPod. But if you're not bothered about that then this is the one.
Stu
Remember doing things like browsing youtube on your phone could eat up that 500MB pretty quickly.
