Keep an eye out man on ebay and preloved.. there are always LOADS on there, i picked up one viv with thermostat, heat mat, thermometre, lighting etc etc for £50 but it wernt the right colour so i had to find a beech one.. I got the viv, heat mat, digi thermometre AND a snake for £30... Then sold the other viv and the snake that came with my new viv for £50

So really, i got a thermostat, 2 heat mats, did thermometre and all the bits for £30!!! Bonus!

Also, if you wanna avoid buying the starter kit (anything from £20 - £40) get a 1 yr+ old corn snake so it can go straight in a viv... i was gonna do it but i want my son to see the snake grow etc.

Depends what you want from

a snake size etc. Different snakes react different to sizes corn rat and milksnakes for instance prefer a slightly smaller viv than a boa constricor or a python.

Starter kits arnt always great better sorcing parts yourself.

If you want to keep it really cheap corns can be kept in plastic boxs (different sizes can be got from

staples and the like) with air holes drilled in good way to keep a snake cheaply and it's fine too. You will here the term RUB alot that's what these are "really usefull box's" :)

any help you need just ask you can keep it fairly cheap if you go that route.

If you want something that small snake wise you could get away with 3 or even maybe a 2foot viv, a few snakes that stay that small like dwarf boas male garter snakes get to about 4foot tree boas don't get to big. A corn will average 5foot but 3 foot tank will be fine and they are very placid and great for kids too. Go on the reptile forum and put a post up asking what snakes would suite your needs then you can research particular breeds as they require slightly different husbandry.

he will still need a thermostat, 2 hides and depending if he wants to do it and on the size of the tank another water bowl.

ideally you need for a corn to start off:

small viv (start with the smart plastic ones) heat mat that covers hlaf of the floor AND MOST IMPORTANTLY thermostat (heatmat UNDER the viv thermostat probe IN the viv touching the surface the heat mat is heating), 2 hides (one warm end one cool end) thermometer (try and get infered ones as for example the one i have (exoterra) are rather unreliable in there reading so i have found out so a digital reading one is better and there not expensive. at least one water bowl the snake cant get under or overturn but just big enough for the snake to get it if it wants to bath (not healthy to have have the waterbowls that double as a hide), substrate and some decor (not needed but looks nicer and makes snake feel more secure than being open at all sides) of course food.

substrate can be aspen, wood chips, bark chips news paper, kitchen roll, astroturf, carpet off cuts or even sand.

if you shop around it wont be to expensive and if you look on that site your on you can pick a baby corn up from £20-£40 depending what you want :)

You dont need a thermostat on a starter kit as the heat mat is outside the tank and the heat mat has to cover just over a third, not half, i always thought it was half but when i got this new snake i was told a third...

escortNreg PLEASE read this its very important if you dont wanna harm your snake!!!!!

http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/snakes/1741...thermostat.html

you DO need a thermostat and any pet shop that told you that you didnt need SHOOTING!

1/3 upto 1/2 is fine depending on the viv mine covers one 3rd as my viv is a bit biger thana starter kit.

oh and something else to get you thinking

seriously you NEED a stat with any heat mat, snakes dont react quickly enough when they get to hot and the heat a mat gives off to something with COLD blood is alot if not used on a stat. even if not visibly i can damage the snakes brain, reproduction organs and really do some damage. il get you a link to a stat in a min.

cheapish stat: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mat-Thermostat-For-R...=item562d08eaaf
