Looks like a really good base.

Get those speakers pulled out and an OE parcel shelf put in!!

Still no under bonnet pics? :( I'm a bit dubious as to whether it's for an M44, to be honest, as there would just be no point.

Does your electric aerial work?

I hate the speakers in the shelf! I want a nice black shelf with no holes in if I can find one!

I will get a under bonnet photo tomorrow I promise! I took these photos before I went to work and didn't want to get all messy lol

I don't have a stereo in the car at the moment so I don't know if aerial will work without one? I've never checked. Probably doesn't knowing my luck lol

I have this photo from the for sale advert if this helps

Nice to know your plans for the shelf :)

Messy opening a bonnet?! Don't you just love the way the E30 bonnets open the 'wrong' way though? maybe it's just me, haha.

One of the common things with E30s is that many owners have aftermarket stereos and don't connect the radio input...... so after time the electric aerial seazes up. It's common, but is't not an expensive fix.

It's one of those E30 quirks that I like as well. A 22 year old car that extends it's own aerial when you put on the radio, but retracts it if you're playing a tape :)

That's an M44. Such an odd, odd thing to do. Especially along with the gearbox and clutch thing. Meh.

It'd be interesting to know if the knock sensors are connected or not (I didn't think the E30 loom & ECU had the connections for these), but that's a question for a few months time :)

The guy sounded pretty genuine on his claims about what he done to the car. Maybe the clutch and gearbox thing works with the LSD he put in? I can't remember which LSD he said he used.

But then, I guess people do mods thinking they make a difference and get a bit of extra power but they don't. Like ECU chips for the Escorts lol

Hate that silly air filter too!!!!

The guy used his parcel shelf and the speakers as a selling point when trying to flog it. I was like 'take them out if it's going to make a difference on price' lol

Took me 15 mins to find the bonnet release! lol I like the way it opens opposite too. I need a bonnet prop though!

I have a few people telling me a few different things about what the vibrations could be, so first thing to do is swap the alloys over.

What are knock sensors and what do they do?

This car has ABS. Apprantly that is quite rare on the E30?

A bonnet prop? These should have hydraulic struts, IIRC.

Knock sensors are found on the M44 engine and are used to adjust/control ignition timing.

As for the vibration, you'd have to be more specific with regards to where you feel it's coming from. If it was the prop, IMO, it's progressive. You'd feel a worn prop bearing at 50, worse at 70, much worse at 90, etc.

Pulling to one side will likely be a worn front arm rear bush, or an arm outer ball joint. Obviously impossible to tell without looking at it. E30 arms are cheap at gsfcarparts.com and DIY-able. Pattern parts tend to be okay.

The bush needs to be pushed into the holder with a press though, if that's the issue.

I'm not sure how mechanically confident you are, as I could talk you through testing, removing and refitting these parts, except the bushes that need pressed in (unless you have a 6 tonne hydraulic press handy, lol).

ABS is reasonably rare on the E30, and was generally confined to the facelift lux models.

Hmm nothing supports the bonnet up, but there is a box of things in the boot, he said he had new struts to fit so maybe thats what he was referring too. I thought he meant suspension struts. The guy was a bit weird!

I have new ABS sensors to fit and new handbrake shoes. Few other things he gave me but not sure what.

He told me to use E36 arms as they the same but E36 ones are stronger? He has replaced one but not the other.

There is no vibration at 40mph. At 50 you feel it a bit. 55-65 is at its worst. Then nothing at 70. He told me it was the U joint on the prop? But as you said that would surely be vibrating constantly.

Now about the pulling to one side, it was pulling left, on the way to work it was pulling to the right, then on way home it wasn't pulling! Strange one.

Thank for your help though, I'm such a noob at all this hehe

I think there should be stuts, maybe not. It should definitely stay up without support though!

The ball joint that doesn't wear is bigger on the E36 arm, but it's irrelevant. Personally, I'd replace both with Lemforder or decent pattern arms, but that's me. I've seen E36 arms and rear bushes (already pressed into their butterflys) for less than £100. You'll get similar for the E30. Even if any one of the components only lasted a year, it's still good value for money.

The pulling is scarily like a fcuked rack, which is reasonably common. You should get it checked properly before spending cash replacing parts. A new rack is megabucks, but second hand ones are cheap. Labour would be good fair bit.

Again, I'd need to know where you feel the vibration.

I'm going to get a few of my mates to have a look at it and see whats what. There are loads of people breaking E30's on the E30 zone website. So parts can be found easily. Just the location of them is usually a problem lol

The vibration comes from the back. I don't feel any vibrations through the steering at all when it does happen. That's all I can say on that subject at the moment until i get a second opinion on it.

Cars! Grrrrrr lol

Looks nice mate!

Get some BMW badges though :P And can you get chrome kidney for E30?

Mine vibrates too bud, through the steering wheel though. Did it when I first got it, while driving at 40mph, 60mph, and when braking. Got wheels balanced and new disks/pads.. problem fixed! Then 2 weeks later, vibrating again. So I chucked it in the garage today to check for sticking calipers, he said he could see nothing wrong with the brake set up or front end. He balanced all the wheels, only thing he noticed was slight buckle in both wheels and rear bearing on its way. But, no fix, which is slightly annoying! Although it doesnt do it as much now, i'm thinking maybe my wheels are wrong offset or something?

Hope you sort yours soon anyway mate, as I know how frustrating it is, even though yours will be a different issue as its not steering wheel vibration.

Made a start today. Stripped the boots carpet, wheel etc out so I can fully investigate the situation back there and I was pretty impressed to be honest.

A bit messy:

So after a clean up it wasn't that bad in the end:

A quick sand and a lick of paint and I shall be happy that. Black Hammerite or underseal? Not sure which one to use?

To the right of the boot was a nice puddle, god knows where that came from as there isn't any marks etc to show any sings of the water running down form somewhere. So i will just have to monitor this area a litte:

The car suffers from overspray on everything so I have made a start sorting this out, first of all around the boot lid and back window seal since I had already started my work here:

Before

After

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg142/mykez69/Bmw%20E30%20318is/DSC02708.jpg

Not in bad condition really. I shall finish this area later.

Boring stuff was done like steam cleaning the interior and making a list of screws and bolts that are missing out of the dashboard! lol

Further to your enquiry Sidrick, about the aerial, It looks like its a new aerial motor. The bracket that hold it in place has been bent etc so im guessing it has been replaced with a motor off something else.

really goin' to town with this aint ya!

I am. :)

In all honesty I have missed the attention to detail that I used to do on my 3 door Escort. I have not owned a car since the 3 door Escort that was worthy enough to get the attention to detail treatment.

Sounds gay but I enjoy going over every part with a fine tooth comb to get it full potential out of it! It's litttle touches like door and boot shuts that people notice.
