Doesn't look bad apart from the dent. Whip the arch liner out and see if you can push it out a bit, might make it look a bit better at least!

As for the engine...leave it alone, it isn't really worth messing about with. If you want a quicker car, just wait and buy a quicker one, tuning the 1.4 is a waste of time IMO.

Thanks. As for knocking the dent out, I don't really want to risk it.. the way that the panel has crumpled I know if I push it back out the paint will crack and flake leaving it open to the elements. I'd rather it be dented than a bodged repair with rust appearing all over it.. know what I mean?

Also sorry to be the grim bringer of reality but the things you have done so far could be invalidating your womans insurance unless you've informed your insurance so i wouldn't go altering the engine etc.

if you are into bikes you must know that even the little things like crash bungs and tank protectors can effect premiums

Yeah we know.. that's why everything is declared and Churchill are trying to tell us that next years premium when renewed on the 18th March will cost £1740. So as you can imagine, they won't be getting our custom again.. I've setup a deal with Adrian Flux though on FCC so members get upto 15% discount when using them, had a quote from them the other day and comprehensive with breakdown, courtesy car, all mods declared, driving abroad, £50k legal fee's & a load more will only cost us £780.

Big difference huh?

1.6 head wouldnt work. would mess up compression ratio and reduce power. best things to do is exhasut system, induction kit and make sure it has good plugs leads etc. also 17's will be slowing you down as more rolling resistance. you'll get better acceleration on 15's IMO

other than that dent, good looking car

stop advising people by making things; up the 1600 head can give gains on the 1400 due to being freer flowing and having bigger valves, ffs fancy plug leads don't make you go faster

not making it up. if it works so well why havent ppl with 1.6 escorts put 1.8 heads on, or ppl with 1.8's put 2.0 heads? it doesnt work. never said plug leads make you go faster, they just allow for a better spark, allowing a cleaner burn.

people have done some of the swaps you just mentioned sadly though most people in forum land are idiots who repeat things they read, very few have actually done anything for themselves or had any direct experience. I'm not reccomending the 1.6 head on 1,4 block personally but it can be done and there are benefits, altering compression ratios is not always a bad idea.

and I'm wondering how the spark will get bigger when the same coil is producing it, get a meter and measure the resistance of standard £10 spark plug leads then masure some £100 splitfire ones, then tell me theres a difference... higher quality maybe but bigger spark better burn, marketing crap better to buy standard ones for standard ignition and pocket the difference

Looks nice mate. I really like the colour coded heater knobs! Nice touch.

Steve - surely if he has the correct tyres on his 17's then they will roll pretty much the same as the 15's?! :)

the 17s will have wider tyres on which does lead to slightly increased rolling resistance, that makes rock all difference to acceleration its the increase in unsprung weight that will make the difference, you pick up a 17" alloy, even a light one with a tyre on it then pick up your 14" spare which do you think the transmission can turn the easiest

Thats a very good point! Never thought of it like that! :)

Cheers for all the comments folks. I've just finished putting a second coat on the spats and the third coat of laquer on the passenger wing mirror as I'm colour coding the standard ones including the blanking plates for them that are always black. I did buy some colour coded wing mirrors for it but one had a whopping crack in it so decided to stick with the originals, only a 20 minute job to change them back again..

Fun part will be putting the wing mirrors back together again with the spaghetti springs :D

Tiger Seal will do a good enough job holding the spats on won't it?

why does everyone have a go at me when i put in an opinion?

I ignore some obvious cr*p some people spew on here.

IMO its always best to use higher quality parts where possible. as people have commented, the cheap wishbones off ebay break after a short period of time, where as i paid a few pence more and have Quentin Hazel ones which are good quality and will last longer (in theory)

everyone has an opinion. let them express it and people decide which advice to take.

oh and lee, you mean araldite :thumb:

Not a problem, I completely appreciate where you're coming from. I've even declared the clear side repeaters on the misses' insurance.. I want it all legit 100% covered just in case of an accident as 9/10 it's her and her son who are in the car.
