Pug, Ford, Ford, Ford and a few more Fords

Been on this site for years, enjoy looking at other peoples cars past and present but never got round to putting my own car history up. So here it goes.

First car, wanted a Nova (don't ask was 16 at time) and didn't care what colour as long as it wasn't white, hated white cars (at the time). Went to see a couple of Nova's but they were all buckets. On way from looking at one Nova we stopped past a used car dealer and spotted this tidy pug 205 1.1, quite liked it, apart from colour but was a good solid car and a deal was done. Got it about 2 weeks before my 17th which was enough time to sort a few bit (tyres, ball joint etc) and have it ready for learning in.

Had the car about 6 months, was my first taste of DIY mechanics, had numerous clutch issues, kept braking the clutch cable, replaced cable, snapped again, replace clutch & cable, snapped again, replaced clutch yet again, yip snapped again so landed up selling it.

Next up, first taste of the Fords, and got abit addicted after that. Bought this 1600 mk5 for £1800 which had only done 23,000 (8 year old at time). Don't have a pic of it when I got it but it was a standard mistral model, steelies, no skirts etc. Here it is after a month or 2 with finesse alloys

By the time I sold it 3 years later it looked more like this plus had morettes but can't find pic

When i traded this in it had done 80k and I got £1500 for it (okay spent some doing it up) but not bad for 3 years motoring!

However, before selling the escort I've always wanted a capri, so my dad and I went half on one, a mk3 2.8 as below.

By this point in my life I was still living and home and making decent money, I'd fancied selling the escort (1600 above) and getting and RS turbo. Abit like the Nova story I went to see a few but for the money I was spending they just weren't up to scrach. I found an rs2000 4x4 which i liked purely because its was a 4x4 and something abit different. Paid £5000 for it which might have been abit expensive but it was good condition and low miles for age (55k)

When I bought it

Never liked the wheels and got a thing about twin headlights (hence the capri, the morettes in the mk5 and now in mk6)

By the time the RS was just the way I liked it I had moved out from the parents and had bought my own place. The capri was still at my folks which meant a 20mile drive just to get it, to the go for a run or whatever, then a 20mile drive home. I wasn't really getting much use of it so my dad bought my half of the capri and I bought another one for myself. As i said earlier I don't like white cars much, but I'd always fancied restoring a car and when i got the change of a solid(ish) mk3 2.8 I jumped at the chance, needless to say it was white.

I won't go into the details of the resto as thats a whole other story but all in all it took a year with LOTS of late evenings and all weekenders at it but by the end I landed up with a decent car (still got it)

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i283/stuey650/White%20Capri/DSCN2438.jpg

After starting on the above Capri resto I realised there was no way I would be able to afford to run and insure 2 expensive cars (RS2000 and Capri). I also needed some money to pay towards the capri so sold the RS for £1800 and spend £900 on the next car, leaving me £900 to spend on the capri resto.

Most £900 cars need work, I really didn't want one that needed work as I had enough to do getting the Capri ready, so I found this Fiesta, 1.25 ghia. Low miles, years MOT etc, great run around, cheaper insurance bla bla. Only one problem, it was WHITE (argghhhhh) Only had it 4 weeks and gave a mate a borrow of it for the weekend. That was the last I saw of it.

He went through a dry stone wall. The damage doesn't look bad in the photo, but air bag went off and aparently the underside of the car was a mess, gearbox mount broken, driveshaft bend, underside dampage and fuel tank burst. Never saw the car just seen these pics as it happened about 300mile away from my house.

Insurance paid out £125 for the car (after excessive excess). Needed another cheap run about (lucky I had that £900 quid I was gonna put towards sorting capri. Bought myself a Ka. The idea was it would do as a run about until i finished the capri, my GF wanted a ka and was learning to drive, so when she passed she would buy the ka from me and I would run the capri. We both hated the Ka and she decided she didn't want to buy it. I ran it anyway until the capri was ready (summer 09) and then just before xmas sold it.

This brings me on to my current daily hack. Bought it in a private sale a week or so after selling the Ka. Went to see 4 pumas of various ages and prices. This landed up being the cheapest out the lot and was by far in the best condition. I really like it, good to have a daily hack thats got abit of power behind it again. GF likes it to, she's now passed her test and I occasionally let her drive me home from the pub

So whats next after the Puma. Well, fancy a mk1 capri, so maybe at somepoint I'll sell the white one and get a mk1. Also want to get an escort cosworth at some point, having had a mk5 1600, mk6 rs2000 4x4 I feel that would be the logical next step. Right now in the process of buying a house so thats gonna have to wait a few years, and prob have to hold onto the puma for the foreseable future to.

Hope you enjoy my story, now post YOURS!

Has your Dad still got his?

Yeah he's still got it, hope he never sells it, its a really good one, far better than the white one will ever be.

  • 2 years later...

So thought it was time for another update on my car status!

I still have the white Capri and use it in the summer, however was starting to look around for something else at the tail end of last year, and never being one to shy away from a challenge bought this:

I bought it over the internet, so didn't see it until it arrived in Aberdeen on the back of a lorry. its a Cat D as someone at somepoint has ran up the back of it. It was originally at 2.8 but as you can see has been stripped so its really a blank canvas. I've been buying up all the running gear required to get it a rolling shell, also got a cracking deal on a 2.9 24v cossie engine and the 2 gearboxes required to build a hybrid box for it. At the moment the rear axle is on and just need a few bolts for the ARB to finish the back and the front has cross member and steering rack and the rest is ready to fire on when I get time.

My daily hack was still the Puma until a few weeks ago when I hit a Deer. Not sure who won that one as the Deer was dead and my car was ruined. Sold it as spares or repair and someone bought it to use the engine in a fiesta. That left me needing a new daily hack. As I'm building a garage at my house at the moment something big and with a tow bar was the preference and I picked up this Octavia Estate VRS. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Skoda fan buts its okay, its a 1.8 Turbo engine and its fairly pokey. I would never have looked at it if it wasn't for the fact it already had a towbar. I'll keep it long enough to finish the garage and for towing the capri shell out to paint shop and back, once thats done I'll more than likely punt it on for something abit less 'old man'. How long that will be much depends on how long the new capri project takes.

Loving the story mate. Would like to know about the capri restoration (And I bet i'm not the only one!) You should make a topic about it.

Done, granted its a copy and paste from a capri forum I use but I'll try keep both up to date going forward.

You never saw your fiesta again after your mate had an argument with a stone wall in it, did you see your mate again and have you lent him any other cars good story though enjoyed your suym thread on your capri.

yeah still mates with him and he did pay me back on the money that I lost so all's well that ends well. Never lent him or anyone else a car since though!

Interesting history....love the capris. Does the new Capri still have rear end damage or its repaired?

Will be good to follow the build

New capri still has the rear damage, if you look at project thread on the rear pic, lower valence at left side, you can see the light reflecting at the wrong angle below where the numberplate goes as its been pushed in. Its fairly minor damage - insurance comapies will write anything off rather than repair, especially that age of car. I have another panel that I cut of a scrap car to go on, just need time to do it with putting up a garage at my house all my time is going on that at the moment.
