Well, I'll put it as it happened and I'm not jumping to conclusions.

Driving the mile or 2 to work last night at 7PM the car drove as it does when it's cold and revs are kept low (it feels like it wants to change up at 2,000RPM but doesnt actually go in until 2,300) anyway, i get to the final turn into the car park and the car beeps at me, and in the insrument matrix display thing it reads "Trans. failsafe mode" (i think it said mode, problem is the dot matrix was a bit faded on those letters)

Anyway, at this point I assume the car is now locked at a low speed only and maybe only a small selection of gears available, but since I was in the carpark I couldnt test this.. I parked it and got out, went to work

12 hours later I come out of work, look under the parked car for oil etc, none, so I start her up, no warnings, just pull away and drive home, completely normally (usual hesitation at gearchange time)

Will be phoning the garage I got it from and asking them to check it out under warranty, and I'm looking at my options for stopping it happening again (A guy one the BMW forums mentions a place in germany that recondition the bottom half of the auto gearbox for less than 400 euros)

booked in for oil and filter (for the g/b) next thursday, only costing 116 quid including VAT which is surprising. At BMW main dealer
0o00o0o.....grabs phone lol
but the garage you bought it from is paying right?

Nope, because there is no fault.....

If the fault code re-appears at any time it will be driven to the dealer i got it from and then they'll be sorting it. (Up to the maximum warranty payout of 300 quid) but quite frankly i wouldnt trust them to know what the fook to do

£300? is that including labour? either way you might as well ask for £300 off the for sale price and get it fixed yourself! thats not even an alternator replaced id bet for that price!

also is that per item or £300 and thats your lot?

300 and thats your lot, it could be a couple of small faults or 1 big one. So basically if this whole box shits its guts theyre only gonna contribute 300 to the replacement, and im not sure if they'd want to do it themselves, meaning i have to let them source the box,and pay their labour rates to have it fitted.

not even one big one, a set of cv joints and you would be buggered. im suprised you went with that with how aprehensive you were about the car in the first place. its hardly an escort you can replace the engine for £300 in an evening at hme! :(

Could be worse, coulda bought a 540 privately with no warranty, and no sport/facelift parts fitted...

you live and learn, i hope the fluid and filter change improves the gearchange, and i hiope to never see the fault code again.. The 300 quid warranty can be used to replace something different within the next 9 weeks... the alarm plays up too

well when you gamble, sometimes you lose.
I can see this getting messy. Hopefully it'll be fine though.
sell it, now
get it on ebay  you dont want to have a bmw when they go wrong. a wish bone on a e 36 is 80 quid plus fitting lol :nutter:
