rite, im hoping to get the white scort on the road this week once its MOT'd. now its also sorn, but hting is to tax it i need the certificate. now if i transfer my insurance over itl take a few days to get it. now all legalities and morals aside, i have the old certificate of insurance hanging around which i believe (need to check) would still show it as insured (obv its not and i wont be driving it claiming its insured on this either!) my question is, after the MOT would i be able to pop into the post office with my v5, MOT and old insurance certificate and tax it or would they run a check to see if the insurance is current? iv got a feeling they do but thought id ask :)

just answers to my question please :) either way it will LEGALY be insured and MOT'd i just wont have the certificate in my hand that day.

Youd think it this modern age the post offices machine that prints the disc would do a check to see if it does have valid insurance and MOT... but if that is the case why do you need to even show those documents? Surely just ID that confirms you as the registered owner should be enough?

But no, you need to show all the documentation, which makes me think they just take them as gospel and print the disc

I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to do, but you can get a cover note emailed to you instantly when you transfer over your insurance.

I think technically your masterplan above is fraud.

basically im pretty sure i have the old certificate of insurance for my white escort nocking about somewhere that, if it was still active would mean the car is still insured on that policy. the certificate would show this.

now that policy is long gone as iv been through loads of cars recently BUT all i want to do is tax the car this week BUT the certificate il get when i re-insure it wont be here untill at least the weekend. basically im wondering if i can use the OLD certificate which says on it its still vallid (even tho iv cancled it) to tax the car. most post offices wont let you tax it unless the certificate is an original so a copy might no work.

i agree it could be classed as fraud BUT the car WILL be insured so in that sense all im doing is being a bit crafty.

As Sidrick says, get them to email you a cover note, these are usually valid for 2 weeks or so.

like i put, as far as im awre and been told post offices arnt supposed to take copies for taxing and it must be the original. my local post office is usually a bit dence and iv used an emailed copy before but have been rejected elsewhere.

Lol, being crafty tends to come back and bite folk.

What you're suggesting is wrong, and although it might work, isn't really worth the risk when you can get a cover note and avoid any craftyness.....

Do you have a local office for your insurance? They can print out originals there and you can collect them.

i cant see how i can be in trouble for doing it tho. the car is legally mot'd, insured and road legal its just the new certificate im lacking...and as i said the cover note that they send via fax/email isnt usually accepted.

god knows, i dont think so tho i believe they are based down south.

You're trying to justify your actions to folk on the internet, actions that you've called crafty and don't want flamed for, so you know it's wrong. You want to tax your car using an MOT certificate that you know is invalid, those are the facts, and as such, most folk will agree it's not an amazing idea.

It makes no difference to me whatever you do at the end of the day :P

Most insurance companies let you print off insurance documents online now incase you loose the orignals (some dont even send them in the post), if the post office is being funny take it to another one? I have never had problems printing it at home, I mean afterall its the same document.

il give it a go then :) its driving home im most worried about as the mot station is about 25miles away.

Dont original documents have a watermark?

Im pretty sure you cant use a printed cover note at all. As for you plan its not worth it. You say "how can you be done" its simple, claiming tax under false circumstances & fraud, are serious offences & hardly worth the chance for what, 2 days?

thats why i was sure you not supposed to use printed copies?

i do see your point and think il leave it till the certificate comes through would have been nice to get it to the show this weekend is all :) can i drive it back from mot station with no tax tho? as long as i go straight home and park it off the road again?

Woah right there!!!

Why the worry there if your changing the insurance over onto this car before the MOT???

You can drive a car to the MOT & straight back home without tax or mot as long as its pre booked but you NEED insurance.
