Posted April 21, 201014 yr seen this on yahoo news , anyone think it will take off ?Speed surveillance cameras on trial A new speed recognition system is being trialled in the UK. Called 'SpeedSpike', the latest type of camera uses number plate recognition to 'track' cars on busy roads. The trial, conducted by the Home Office and the Police, was secretive until a House of Commons report unveiled it. The cameras use similar technology to the average speed check units currently in use on motorways. The difference is that they can track cars in built up urban areas. If they find a car has covered a distance at an average speed higher than the limit, fines can be automatically generated. Two places currently have cameras on site - one in Southwark, London, and another on the A374 in Cornwall. The US company that makes the cameras, PIPS Technology, is hoping to secure a contract to install them nationwide. It claims SpeedSpike is cost-effective, and is proven to reduce speeding in busy areas, including outside schools. However, the cameras have attracted criticism, notably from Conservative MP Geoffrey Cox, who said: "you always have to ask if it is really necessary to watch over people, to spy on them and film them. We will get to a point where it becomes routine and it should never be a matter of routine that the state spies on its citizens." Superintendant Tim Swarbrick, chairman of the Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership, defended the cameras, saying: "average speed recorders have proved to be very successful in roadworks on the major trunk roads. They have reduced injury and deaths and we would like to replicate this positive effect."
April 21, 201014 yr old news i think, there was something a while ago, basically about the yellow speed cameras on motorways measureing your average speed all of your journey, ie newcastle to cornwall etc, they were trying to get it on every main road so it covered most of the country.
April 21, 201014 yr I'm more than happy for them to do this... if they increase the national speed limit to 80, i'm sure I was watching a car programme before which showed since they reduced it back down to 70 there has been more accidents on average.
April 21, 201014 yr thats big averages tho liam, i believe it was the 60's when they did that? either way it does need raising. with the technology of cars its been a long time coming. id say 90 myself but i think alot of drivers would kak themselfs.

I would think you answered the reason why its not a good idea right there tbh.As for the camera's I dont really have a problem with it. If your not speeding wheres the harm, as for using them to watch people, again, it doesnt really affect me (why should it?) as im not doing anything wrong.

That's exactly the response I've been waiting for. A sheep to say "well if I'm doing nothing wrong then they can do it." Would you like to be monitored like a test specimen for all of your days so when you do something wrong you can be punished? That sort of attitude will drive this country into the ground. Have you ever gone over the speed limit? Because I have. On many occasion. And I'm not an unsafe driver. I know that doing 85mph on a very straight road is illegal but it is still safe (as long as your car is roadworthy). It's all about driving relative to the conditions (rain, bends etc). Where is your sense of privacy PeeWee?
April 21, 201014 yr Pmsl its nothing to do with being a "sheep" I seriously couldnt care less, maybe its that I have far better things to think about instead of thinking the whole world is a conspricy waiting to pounce on me. Of course I have drifted over the limit, it happens although no I dont do 85 just because I think its safe or a clear stretch or think "my car is safe to do so". Edited April 21, 201014 yr by PeeWee
April 21, 201014 yr well i think its fair enough if used appropriately, i.e on roads that have poor track records with accidents etc. I don't agree with them being used on every road, junction and corner in the uk!
April 21, 201014 yr The vans I drive have trackers on them. If I go over the limit (well, I am allowed 10% plus 2mph) then it gets flagged up on a report for my manager to see and deal with. For the company its good, all their vans are never speeding (it also records harsh braking, idling time, over revving, etc). However, it does mean that when in a rush, like most people experience from time to time, I am having to constantly keep and eye on my speed, which can sometimes be a distraction from the road.
April 21, 201014 yr I hope this just includes motorways or everytime we just creep over 30/40mph on our way to work we will get stung! "Well you should be paying attention" ... sy what you will we all know that we've looked down a few times and noticed we're doing 35 in a 30 and then slowly slowed back down to avoid the fuzz
