just wondering if any evo members have had this problem.

When you start the car the revs sit at 1500 for ages then splutters to below 1k revs then kinda misfires and idles lumpy. So far ive replaced the idle control valve but that hasnt soved it.

Also when you drive it and come to a stop at traffic lights it seems stay at 1500-2000k.

Now ive had it in the garage and there saying a sticky valve may be at fault and that to do the repair im looking at 700quid.But im not convinced as ive questioned whats exactly wrong and ive been told its Low pressure, gasket seals, over reving on its own or a sticky valve?

just kinda confused at the moment as i wouldnt spend that sort of money putting a 1.8 engine rite as i could have a 2litre up and runing for that price.

Any views and help would be grateful

to bee revving that high i would expect you to have an air leak .does it go ok otherwise? early zetecs did suffer from sticky valves you MUST use correct oil 5w30

I have seen this before and been mocked for my suggestion of a place to look. Check out the breather pipes to the inlet manifold, the one that runs from the crankcase valve to the back of the inlet has a habit of collapsing and splitting. It could have even come off the back of the inlet.

Ive had one before where it had come off the inlet and the symptoms were like you have described.

Its free to check and cheap to fix if it is the problem

well ive just got it back and ive tryed half a tank with abit of red x,but hasnt really helped, took it on a motorway run to birmingham and back.

every time i start it it sticks at 1500 idles lumpy and when i come to a stop at traffic lights if i delay putting the clutch rite down it seems ok but if pressed rite down the revs rise high?

very confused and unsure what to do next

still think you have air leak then and trig's suggestion would be high on my list .you should check all pipes from inlet manifold and dont forget the servo pipe often overlooked :thumb:

It will almost definately be what Trig said, it a right angled pipe sitting dead centre at the bottom rear of the inlet manifold, ive had one collapse and symtoms were the same. replace with new piping :)

Oh and if your unsure, pop over to see me :)

I had a similar problem and the pipe trig mentioned did make a difference although it was the actual valve (egr valve i think, the one attatched to the exhaust manifold plate) which brought the idle back from lumpy and shaky to steady and smooth.
i had the same problem and it was a simple case of unplugging the connector to the icv , cleaning it and plugging it back in. worked a treat and not had a problem since. just incase the other suggestions dont work, theres another thing you could try, takes two minutes. did the same to a golf v5 two weeks ago and that sorted his problem too :) hth
