Having owned my 5er for 3 months now and become aware that it's using up a large amount of my disposable income and not really giving me much in return (can't have fun on UK roads so what's the point of having all this performance)

I've realised that there is more to life than having a fantastic car (and TBH, a car is a car, yes the BM shits on lots of things but they all do the same task at the end of the day)

So my criteria for a car now is, cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to fuel, this will free up over £100 a month for me to spend on other things like family days out, house stuff and my go karting hobby.

So I'm now looking at Peugeot 306 D turbos, could well have one by tomorrow.

I thought it would be worth it, I thought that because it costs (im not exactly sure how much) more than the likes of an old 306 D turbo that it would be (exactly that much more) of an experience to own, but it's not. I think i'd rather save myself £100+ a month and just live with the cheapest to run car ever.

But if anyone wants to recomend an escort TDI, thanks but no thanks

Seems a bit extreme and unless you're doing a fair amount of miles each week I'm not sure the compromise of having an old diesel will pay off

Wouldn't it be better to have a car that's roughly half the weight and half the engine capacity, so you can retain the level of power to weight performance and possibly half the running costs?

Aye. E36 323i saloon would be ideal for you.
can you afford buying a newer car maybe? i know that the new fiesta and focus econectic diesels are very good on fuel economy and with the fiesta you don't pay no tax at all!!!! the focus i think is about £35 a year. just a thought mate as either of these cars will save you money big time!
1.4 Puma??

seat ibiza 1.2 LOL

bought my lass one and she uses £20 a MONTH petrol, I use that in 2.5 days hahah

Mate I do about 400-500 miles a month, that is about 130 quids worth of fuel in the BMW, or 60 in a diesel hatch, the BM is nearly 70 a month to insure, a diesel hatch would be just over 20. Over a year thats £1400 wasted (and yes i do think it is wasted, i think a 306 will do the job of moving me and the family round fine, for my speed fix ill keep it on the kart track..

I'll take a looksie at them on ebay, but the plan is to buy cheap and fuel cheap, 323 economy cant be much better than 30MPG average can it?

As said i wanna buy cheap and run cheap, no point in saving on road tax and fuel costs if the initial purchase cost is several thousand, for a focus or fiesta ecospastic to SAVE me money i'd have to run it for decades, I reckon I can get 12 months of 306 motoring in for very little over a grand, that includes the cost of the car, insurance, tax, and fuel.

Again, ill take a quick look and see if you can buy em cheap enough but MPG wont be enough i dont think

What MPG does it give?

I'm not looking for a car that couldnt pull the skin of a custard, i want it to actually move on the motorway AND give well over 30MPG, ideally close to 50

Just to clarify, you do upto 500 miles a month and thought the 4L V8 in the 540 was going to be economical.... how?
Red diesel is your only option, lol  :ninja:

dunno what your budget is but food for thought:

focus

I would'nt worry about the cc, speed or size of my engine, however i do have a large penis

However, are'nt the Seat Diesels meant to be very good for mpg?

No, I knew it wasnt gonna be economical, I knew it would only give 23MPG, but at the time I didnt mind £120 a month in fuel since I thought every journey would be magical and also I have that kind of money to spare, but instead of spending that kind of money on cars I'd rather spend it on other things now that's all.

Some people like to spend hundreds a month on finance agreements and insurance on expensive cars

Some people like to spend as little as they can each month on motoring and leave money in their bank to spend on other stuff, I was person number 1, now im person number 2
