is the spare an obvious spare? (meaning is it a non-alloy full sized non-space saver spare?)

if once on the car its obviously a spare due to it not matching your other alloys most police will just advise you to sort out the spare, if your repeatedly caught after being advised they tend to get peeved and throw a fine at you for driving a vehicle that has a obvious fault (or if they wanna take the pee "without due care"")....hardly ever happens tho so not likely to cause issues.

afaik it isnt technically illegal to drive a vehicle without a spare wheel.... judt not good sense in a rozzers opinion.

its a gti alloy wheel mate with a new tyre on it ,so was going to use that tyre which will mean i have no spare then come end of july im getting 2 new front tyres plus lower arms and arb done for mot.

is that a good way to solve my problem?

so even with the spare on all your alloys will still be Gti alloys?...shouldnt be an issue, no rozzer will bother to check tbh.

a car doesnt have to have a spare tyre by law

Why do new mini's come with a can of tyre weld if you had to have one ;)

But as said, for a spare any size will do, alot of spares are a tad smaller in rolling radius. but when it comes to legailties of MOT etc you need matching wheels on each axle

you dont need to carry a spare tyre by law, but if you do carry a spare tyre and its bald and they catch you you will be slapped with 3 points, also make sure you have matching tyres on the front, and matching on the rear, if you have 2 different size tyres on the front then if caught could get points same with the rears

yep all gti alloys just no tyre on the spare.

cheers for the advice bud

Don't need a spare, but if you do - it has to be the same size as all the other wheels.

as stated, the spare doesnt need to be the same size as the other 4. as long as the rolling radius is the same there isnt a problem.

unless you say you got a puncture? my new car came with 18's but a 16" space saver for temp use, the old bill cant do nothing aslong as its not for permanant use, they also CANT fine you for a bald spare wheel as its not on the car, your not using it or anything, your car doesnt have to have a spare wheel, for mot or for any legal reasons, but if you get a puncture on the motorway for example and you say you havent got a spare, you are in the rubbish just a little bit .....

Tyre weld ftw :)

It is ILLEGAL to carry a spare tyre that is bald, is not a legal requirement to carry a spare tho. Think of it logically fella, you travel down the motorway and get a puncture, you then go to change the tyre at the side of the road, are you gonna put your spare tyre on the car knowing its bald, no you wont, the police will not like you fitting a bald tyre at the side of the road either as now you are liable to have a accident and now willingly accepting the risk of getting points. Hence the reason why its illegal. You will also not get in trouble if you get a puncture on the motorway and not having a spare, thats y you say i took it out due to it being unsafe to be in the car if this event happened, and it is in the garage awaiting a new tyre police cant do anything for that

And how would the police know if its for permanent use or not, they dont. Normal police will not know the full in's and outs, but you get tugged by traffic police then they will have you, so if you choose to have a bald tyre on/in your car whilst driving and get tugged, they find that fault they will go over your car with a fine tooth comb, they can even take your car for it to be tested by vosa!!! So why run that risk for the sake of a bald tyre.

You say you got a new car if you mean a escort then as we all know escorts never came fitted with 18's, plus the manufacture would not fit a car with 18" inch alloys and give you a 16" space saver as that would make the car illegal in the laws eyes

Spare tyre

There is no legal obligation to carry a spare tyre and it does not have to comply with the legal requirements while it is stowed away. However, when fitted to the vehicle (for example, following a puncture) it must then comply with the law. A spare tyre is not a testable item in the MOT test, though the examiner may draw your attention to an unserviceable item as a matter of courtesy.

I love on this site how people guess the law. How the f*ck is it illegal to carry a bold spare tyre? Thats like saying its illegal to have bold tyres in your shed.

It is illegal to drive a car with a bold tyre less than 1.6mm however its different on LGV/HGV's, its also illegal to use different size wheels/tyres on the same axle. (with the exception of a spacesaver spare wheel, oh which the idea is that you change the wheel asap)

DRIVING WITHOUT A SPARE TYRE IS DRIVING WITHOUT DUE CARE? fml.
