Stu
The RS2000 engine is great when turbocharged, however more expensive than a Zetec to get to that point. The 4x4 transmission isn't strong enough really and is very expensive to replace. Cheaper to buy a 4x4 cossie.

(just out of curiosity) The 4x4 transmission doesnt stand up to the standard engine I've often heard. Let alone with a turbo I'd be suprised if it didnt tear it apart first time you put it into first.
tezmanian devil
Standard 4x4 gear is as good as a chocolate tea pot, quaife isnt much better either...
massivewangers
4x4 running gear is just fine if it's well maintained, even on modified examples up to a point. A lot of the stories about it are just that; stories.
escort4x4
Everyone thinks the 4x4 system on the rs2000 is weak, it will weaken if not maintained properly, LORD VADER on the rs2000-16v site was running 300+bhp safely on a 4x4 rs2000, if not maintained and looked after it will spit its dummy out. There have been a few rs2000 engines turbo's but as of late the most common conversion is the 2.3 route, a few 2.3 turbo's have been built and have been proven to be very fast motors, the most well know one was owned by JAKEYVEGAS on that site, his 2.3 turbo had mass amounts of money spent on it, including a transfer box built to handle 350bhp, this car was going sideways round roundabouts till the person who bought it off him blew it up, that engine was fully forged from what ive read. You can build a budget one for less then 2k but this is running minimal boost, not alot of them have been built so its still early days for this sort of modification, but if you have the money and have time you can build a very fast rs2000 turbo, They would easily keep up with a cossie, subaru, evo and many others, one was up the arse of the new focus rs, and the owner was pissed seeing a mk6 escort up his jacksy
Stu
Of course it always comes down to how mechanically-sympathetic you are but the transfer box is the weak link. Some people try and modify them with all kinds of stuff like increasing its oil capacity but i'd be surprised if they know the actual failure mode of it. I too know of a couple of successful ones first hand, but I know of more failed ones, hence my comment
escort4x4
yes ur very right stu, i think one fella spent best part of 3k having his transfer box strengthened, others are trying to use a evo transfer box, either way turbo'ing a 4x4 is very very expensive
