I agree with that, but it often seems that on this forum, a lot of the ex-owners spend a lot of time telling people how poo poo Escorts are and how they shouldn't bother wasting their money. Or there are a lot of sarcastic, unhelpful replies made which don't do much for the new members.

 

Of course there are better cars out there, even in the price bracket that Escorts fall into, and modifying cars isn't a particularly sensible way to spend money, but that's perhaps kind of missing the point I always thought.

 

This site, to me at least, seems to be made up more of people who own (or have owned) Escorts on their way to owning different, or more expensive, cars, as opposed to owning and modifying them for the sheer enjoyment of it, or because it's a car that means something to them. Where as a lot of other clubs I'm associated with are made up of people who are genuinely enthusiastic about a certain car type, with the odd few who are just using the site for information on how to keep their cars going until they sell them.

Im really offended at your "couple of meetings" comment, Ive done nothing but go out of my way for the members of this club since I started organising the shows and a few social events, much more than some people that sit on the forum bashing their keyboards all day do.

 

Its funny that the comment I made and used you as an example for could easily be seen as support for you, pointing out that sometimes it seems as though people hang around to have a go at others, but that wouldnt have made you the centre of attention, the victim, would it.

What a load of toss....

 

The Escort was not a 'poor' car at all. Compared to it's opposition, the 306, ZX, Astra etc etc, it was ok. Middle ground really. Some will say the 306 drove better (I happen to disagree, as the 306 has a typical French car, shoddy gear selection and clutch operation), but it wasn't screwed together quite so well. The Astra didn't go round corners but was sometimes a bit better equiped and there was better sporting models. The ZX was ugly as sin but cheap. They're all much of a muchness, all have good and bad points.

 

The big factor is; that since that time, cars have moved on MASSIVELY. The Focus was a huge leap forward, and cars have been improving at a massive rate in recent years in handling and build quality terms, which makes cars like the Escort seem a bit low quality by modern standards.

 

I've owned loads of Escorts over the years, and people I know who've had things like the 306, Astra and all that business, haven't had trouble free motoring. All cars have their problems, even newer ones.

 

No one is saying the MK5/6 Escort was an amazing car, it was pretty average, but it wasn't rubbish (apart from perhaps the very early MK5s).

 

I think the point I was trying to make that seems to have partly spawned these threads, is that this forum often seems to lack real enthusiasm for it's subject matter. It doesn't matter that the car wasn't amazing, but that people are enthusiastic about it.

 

Take your car; I'd much sooner have an RS2000 than a Fiesta ST. I've driven one and thought it felt pretty wet. Went ok, handled ok, but did nothing at all for me, felt soul-less and boring. Whereas the RS just feels more raw and on edge. Of course it isn't as good from a technical point of view, but it pushed my buttons more than the Fiesta did. Obviously for you, the Fiesta was more appealing, so you bought one of those instead.

 

I drive an Escort because I WANT to. I'm sure I could buy a better car, and I'm looking to chop the MK6 in I've been using daily for something else, as I want a motorway mile-muncher, but I still have another Escort that I'm building up. If I got rid of that, I could probably buy an even better car than I'm looking at, but that isn't the point. Owning an Escort is enjoyable, I like the people I've met through owning them, and the feel of them, and what can be done to them.

 

It doesn't always make financial sense, but it doesn't have to, it's a hobby and something I get enjoyment from. My point was that a lot of people on here don't seem to be enthusiasts, just people who happened to own an Escort once upon a time. Just struck me as strange, given the other forums I'm on and how they are.
