GTi Chris
Getting a slight whining, particularly when doing low speeds in high gears, seems worst at 40mph in 4th gear. Only does it when my foot is on the gas- so it ain't bearings and I would've thought it was gearbox related. Gonna try Lucas transmission fluid (check for debris in my old fluid) maybe differential bearings if former doesn't work but wondered if anyone had any views, or similar experiences, before I start spending, perhaps wasting, money. Cheers in advance.

Don't reckon its a CV joint cause I had a weird humming noise recently and replaced a CV joint to fix that. It appears to be connected to the engine in that it stops when you let off the revs (when mobile) and starts again as soon as your foot goes back on. It appears worst at 40mph in 4th gear. Can't hear it in the lower gears but I think its there just not as audible as the engine noise is louder.

ScORTED
tbh you can get another gearbox for about £40 maybe less these days, but what you describe could be almost anything

Not really a little resistance into 3rd but nothing major Had a new timing belt recently wondering if that's been done right AC- I drive a GTi

GTi Chris
The Lucas oil (50/50 with normal transmission fluid) seems to have quitened?!? it down somewhat. The fluid I changed also appeared discoloured and it had only been in there for around 20k. I'll try changing the diff bearings next- don't wanna buy a 2nd hand box unless I really have to- better the devil you know and my car has only done 52k. its a super charger Ye mate- thanks for that Does the noise sound like this? I'm not surprised a new box and driveshafts fixed it mate Tbh I'm too fussy and should probably just turn up my radio until it breaks and take it from there
