bmw 318is not bad mpg, was as cheap for me to insure as an escort, 140bhp, sporty loking, handles like its on rails and easy less than 1500, infact thats what my IS is up for :D

As long as you like the crusty arches and chassis rust that escorts come with go for an old beemer :thumb:

hmmm

theres a few factors that you need to take into consideration here that you havnt mentioned, let me see if I can break it down...

I was thinking a 1.6 Ford Puma, but been getting a few quotes and they aren't too cheap to insure, my stats are:

  • 19 years old
  • Held licence for 2 years
  • 1 NCB
  • 3 Points (TS10)
  • Im bunged full of Steds so need space to move my entire upper tosso due to the fact that I cant turn my head independantly from my shoulders
  • I look like a young scrote
  • I have the intelectual level of a grapefruit
  • Im cheap so dont want to pay out for a proper car
  • slightly annoying to other drivers constantly

seems once the new "considerations" are taken into account there really is only one plausable choice of vehicle

out of all the suggestions i would have to say the Zetec s is the one i would go for but have you thought outside the box such as an MG ZR or maybe even a Seat Ibiza

I've found this:

1.4 MG ZR - Apparently returns 40MPG ? And looks bloody nice.

Quotes in the region of £1,900 :( I think i'm being too honest on my insurance :nutter:

Mate of mine had a 1.4 ZR and it was a fantastic car. Handled well, was nippy and did decent mpg!

Build quality was fine so don't listen to the "it's a rover it'll break" brigade. Especially when you take into consideration that my brand new focus at the time had bits of trim poppin off every other week!

Not sure what the 1.6 Puma is like but my girlfriend's 1.7 wasn't ever so good compared to a Zetec Escort. It's ok around town and things but on long runs can be a bit thirsty due to the short gearing.

What about a Fiesta Zetec-S? Might get you in insurance a bit, but I think it's gotta be one of the best fun cars you'd get in that bracket. Half decent ones do appear at that price, so I'd definately consider it. Focus is also worth considering, and I bet you'd get a far better Focus than you'd get a Golf. And don't believe the hype, the MK4 Golf isn't that well built, I certainly wouldn't put it much above a Focus. The VW build quality arguement holds little water these days IMO, they don't justify the silly prices anymore.

Problem is, insurance will still be ridiculous for you no doubt, so getting anything too exciting is going to be a no go. But I should think a Zetec-S Fiesta/Puma/Focus would be in reach. All handle well and are fun to drive (Fiesta and Puma especially), but they shouldn't hurt you too much to run I wouldn't think. They'll feel effortlessly fast after the Escort, so I can't imagine you'd use anymore fuel in normal driving.

Absolutely spot on ! Nothing to add.

Seriously, a Skoda Fabia 1.4 16v.

That would do you fine. It may not be that sporty, but it has everything else in its favour.

If not what about a Seat Ibiza, although i'm not entirely sure what flavour you would get for your monies.

Seriously ?

They don't give away free OAP cards with Fabias ?

Had one as a company car - very frustrating.

I can't imagine getting passionate about that car, it's like a Tesco branded product - it does the job, you don't give it a second glance.

I've had a 1.4 02 Trophy blue ZR which I made into 1.8 VVC approx. 170 BHP on AVO coilovers and fully polybushed - RS2000s and ST170s didn't stand a chance, but... but it's not a Ford, the build quality is truly appalling, k series engine requires CONSTANT attention (but it's a pretty rewarding one too) and in the end it's just a facelifted Rover 200 which crushed trough Halfords. As a track car - yes, everyday car - no no no.

The 1.4 105+ is all about looks and no go. About equal with my mates badly serviced Zetec-S. And you have to rev the balls off it.

but arn't these notorious Head gasket problems

yes, the k series is a seriously flawed lump :( bar the HG thing they are not that bad cars.

Ill still stick by my guns, focus 1.4/6 1.4 is a group 4 irrc and the 1.6 a group 6, your escort is a group 5, the focus driven with a bit of savvy can see over 40mpg. Considered checking out the insurance on a 2.0 esp, they are only a group 8 and i was only about £60 more a year to insure it over my 1600 escorts

depends where you look, my e36 has one tiny bit of rust on the bootlid, my 1989 e30 has a tiny bit on the rear valance and thats it, none of my others had hardly any rust either? dont buy crap and youl be ok :)

what about a golf tdi? thats what im looking at, my pay will be dropping and i cant afford to run a 2.5 for work s going the sensible option :)
