I love the colour of these, tad 'boxy' though? You'll be having a knock on the door by the tax man soon if you keep going through cars at your current rate lol

ps......

It's pissing it down though so they won't be changed until the weekend

I got some new standard plates from work today as the old ones are manky. It's pissing it down though so they won't be changed until the weekend. I'll hopefully get some better pictures up then!

Pissing down is being kind was bouncing off the ground!

Clear from Dundee down you were just lucky.

  • 2 weeks later...

Nothing to see here:

Uprated dash speakers to replace the poor originals. These fit behind the existing grilles, so you won't see a cosmetic change, but have been recommended to give an excellent value for money upgrade :)

The latest news is that the o/s handbrake has stuck on twice in the last week. It's due into work on Saturday to diagnose whether it's the caliper or the handbrake cable, so hopefully it'll get sorted this weekend.

A guy from our Audi/BMW bodyshop is doing me a homer on the only paintwork imperfections on the car in a few weeks when he's less busy. It'll likely be a full respray for the tailgate and bumper. Hopefully I'll get some pimpin' photos up after that!

Got the car up on the ramps after work today as my mate can't manage tomorrow. Caliper was stuck on but the cable was moving freely. Obviously it was going to be the most expensive part that was fcuked. We replaced the caliper there and then since I'd ordered in both the cable and caliper :) Working fine now, although the brakes will be re-bled tomorrow as they're not-quite-right.

Andrzej highlighted a corroded fuel line and that the timing belt hasn't been changed in a while. so we'll be addressing these shortly!!

This arrived today:

I did stuff today!

I removed the original Clarion head unit and fitted my Kenwood KDC-W4044UG. It was dead to the world :( I checked the wiring and although the original leads fitted fine, the connections were in the wrong place. So I went to Halfords......

I then came home to get my wallet (facepalm) and went back to Halfords to pay for my ISO harness. Plugged it all together and it's working fine. Even on stock speakers it seemed much sharper and clearer :)

Inspired by this, I decided to have a crack at fitting the uprated dash speakers today as well. I've never touched ICE in a car, so this was new, potentially disasterous ground for me, but a great guide on Audi Fans dot net made it look fairly straight-forward, so I removed the grille:

The speaker is held in by a single screw so easy enough to remove. I made some money out of the job, which is a boost!

You need to remove 2 of the lugs on the new speakers (Pioneer TS-G1012I) in order for them to fit in the original hole without destroying your dash. I just bent them back and forth until they snapped off, then slotted the speaker in place and screwed it in:

I then refitted the grille:

5-10 minutes per side, keeping the OE looks, and the difference is like night and day! :) Quite a modest little set-up, but in comparison to the dates originals, I'm delighted with the transformation that cost a grand total of just under £80 for speakers (new) and headunit (used, but mint).

Lol, here is my caliper that was fitted yesterday...

I love how much care you take of your cars Sid, you should rename yourself "mike brewer"...Have i already called you this before?

Nah, you haven't, but I do see the similarities. I'm taller and don't have a horrific accent though!

My view on cars is that if something's fcuked, just replace it. In the past, I've seen or done so much bodging that only leads to future problems/replacement/expense. Some of the most neglected things when replacing mechanical parts are nuts & bolts. These are the b*stards that seaze, get fcuked taking off and generally cause grief, but all are available from dealers at just pence each!

Perhaps that's just my view since my best mate is a mechanic and I work for the main dealerships so get parts at cost, lol.

Diagnosis, a new caliper and a brake fluid change could cost probably in the region of £300+ from my work, but it cost me £50 all-in. So I can understand why folk take the easy route.

Thanks for the interest. Nothing drastic planned.

Next on the to-do-list is fitting clear side repeaters (removing the blue tinted oval ones that are on it!), uprating the rear speakers, investigating options to upgrade the front lights as the standard ones are useless at night, getting some paintwork done and getting new tyres (Vredestein Quatrac) and maybe new wheels if the right set come up at the right price.
