2 do what ford did and fit a sierra floor pan into the escort,

 

further to that the amount of mk3-4s on passion ford that follow the same route is another reason for thinking.

Depends if the guy is watching his pennies, it's quite an expensive conversion if you are doing it properly.

You could always look out for an rs2000 4x4 shell and use that. Just convert the engine to rwd mounted and link to the existing prop or something. That way the rear end is sorted. Just need to make room for the gearbox.
